Description
The project is aimed at increasing public awareness on the issues of international development cooperation and on the 17 Sustanaible Development Goals. The ‘Butterfly Effect’ project’s aim is to promote sustainable development by strengthening positive attitudes in young people aged between 11 and 19 years old in order to fight discrimination and promote respect for all diversities (gender, sexual orientation and gender identity, ethnic and national origin, religion, disability), consolidating critical thinking and empathy and stimulating them to actively engage in supporting people who are victims of discrimination, in order to build a society capable of isolating and de-powering these phenomena. The project intends to respond to adolescents' need to understand what discrimination is, its forms and intersectionality and how the Web can amplify its impact on people's lives. A further need to which the project responds is to build virtuous pathways through which to contribute to a different narrative and to have the right tools to contribute to a culture of differences. The project acts through training and awareness-raising activities. The main actors of change are therefore young people aged between 11 and 19, who represent a group which is sensitive and subject to many changes and external influences. The pandemic has particularly affected them, limiting their social activities. Due to social distancing, many aspects of life have been transported into the virtual sphere, leaving adolescents and young people alone to deal with issues of social exclusion and accelerating their increasing exposure to phenomena such as online hate speech and cyberbullying, without the necessary tools and strategies to counter them. Another important target group are teachers and educators also because of their possibility to interact and support young people in their development. The project also intends to address young activists (aged 18-30), to respond to their need for greater visibility and recognition of youth activism on equality issues and in the belief that these young people know how to communicate more effectively with their peers. Finally, a target group are the educational communities and the local communities as a whole, which will be reached through awareness-raising strategies. Outcome 1 aims to improve the capacity of teachers and educators to identify and address hate speech with young people and will be pursued through the definition of a new training curriculum and the implementation of a MOOC. The training will provide innovative ideas and tools for teachers to address hate speech with their students, through media literacy, intercultural approach and active engagement. Outcome 2 aims at empowering boys and girls to identify and prevent hate speech, through the creation and testing of innovative educational itineraries, which will provide tools to deconstruct stereotypes and encourage their civic participation also through digital media and social networks. The innovativeness consists in providing tools to promote an active role, to create a supportive community in which young people can become real bystanders, with methodologies ranging from gamification to the use of apps.
