Description
The project aims primarily at improving the maternal and child health conditions, both at preventive and curative level, of the most vulnerable groups of the targeted area, the north-eastern suburbs of Nairobi, in order to reduce maternal, neonatal and under-5 mortality rate. Following to the Sars-CoV2 pandemic, in Kenya as in most other countries, a strong decrease in the quality of health care services was experienced. Social restrictions, fears related to the virus, stigma and the difficulties encountered by the health system to implement the necessary measures to ensure patients’ safety , led patients - and in particular the most vulnerable cathegories – to avoid making use of the healthcare system. This situation entails a potential risk for all those health conditions that require constant attention by trained health personnel and for those situations characterized by the risk of complications, primarily the pathways of pregnancy. The following activities will be caried out in order to achieve the expected results : massive multilevel awareness action at community level, at peripheral health centre level and at referral level (Result 1). Enhancement of the Kenyan technological capital through the digitization of treatment and pregnancy paths, with the aim of improving the virtual and consequently physical approach of the patient to health centres. (Result 2) This action will be inspired by the lessons learned during the pandemic and will be carried out in collaboration with the partner mHealth, a digital company leader in the sector and particularly active in the development of innovative solutions in the health field and recently in the field of Covid19 . Final aim is to pilot the digitization of mother and child services in 3 target health centres. By promoting health messages and saving functions through a virtual wallet, digitization is intended as a way to reduce waiting time as well as the health care costs incurred by families during pregnancy, consequently also reducing the probability of abandoning health journeys. The above will be supported by a research (Result 3) conducted in collaboration with the academic project partners. The research is intended to be a tool for studying a completely new peri/post-pandemic situation by collecting data to deepen the knowledge of the progress registered in pregnancy pathways and the impact of digitization on them, both within the intervention area and in other similar contexts. Awareness-raising, digitization and related research activities converge in the participatory production - by the proponent, the project partners, the Ministry of Health and the stakeholders - of guidelines, protocols and Emergency Management Plans, which are intended to be a tool for improving preparedness and response to epidemics and other adverse events which may occur to mother and child health.
