Description
Latin America has experienced the largest internal migration flow in its history in the last five years, with more than 5.6 million people leaving Venezuela for other countries on the continent. Colombia was the main destination of the Venezuelan population, with more than 1.8 million residents. The socio-economic integration of Venezuelan migrants and refugees has become a major challenge for countries in the region, especially in those geographical areas suffering from structural problems of development, inequality and violence. In Colombia, the promulgation of the Temporary Protection Statute represents a milestone for the recognition of the rights of Venezuelan persons residing in the country and at the same time is a challenge for implementation at the local level. The overall objective of the proposed initiative is to contribute to the social and economic inclusion of the Venezuelan migrant population in Colombia, with an emphasis on women and young people residing in the cities of Santa Marta and Barranquilla. ALMAS (Action for Work, Migration and Synergistic Reception in Colombia), proposes a virtuous model that networks public and private actors, civil society and migrant communities themselves. According to the latest studies in Colombia, migrant women work more, earn less and the quality of conditions of their work is significantly lower than that of their Colombian counterparts. Less than 10% of these migrant women are formally employed, most of them have precarious jobs that prevent them from enjoying fundamental rights such as access to decent work, health, education and care. Although Venezuelan women have a higher educational profile than male migrants, their participation in the labour market in intensive (number of hours worked) and extensive (overall participation rate) terms is lower than that of their male counterparts. The unemployment of pre-pandemic Venezolan women was 19.9% versus 13.6% of Colombian women and 7.6% of Venezolan men (DANE data- January 2020). This stems from family and childcare responsibilities, lack of support networks and gender discrimination. Although these barriers are also evident among Colombian women, the migrant status of Venezuelan women makes this problem even more acute
