Description

The proposal seeks to promote the educational, social and professional inclusion of vulnerable youth and young people with disabilities in Kenya, with a view to increase the number of students with relevant skills, including technical and professional, and favour their participation in the labour market, both as employment and self-employment. The action, which has a 36-month duration, aims at strengthening the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system for the educational inclusion and the job placement of vulnerable youth and young people with disabilities, with a specific impact on the equality index in professional training and number of TVETs accessible to students with disabilities. In order to achieve the expected impact, the initiative features two synergic lines of intervention: one at national level (with 375 vocational training institutions in 15 Counties), in partnership with the vocational training regulatory authority (Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority-TVETA), and one at regional level in collaboration with the Nairobi County Direction of Vocational Training Center – VTC (with 8 vocational training public institutions). The national level action aims at strengthening the public authority’s services for the technical-managerial support of VTCs administrators and principals and promoting an inclusive vocational training in Kenya. Thanks to a media campaign aimed at revitalising young people’s perception of vocational training as a valuable choice, the project aims at reviving the role offered by it for the growth of civil society. The development and dissemination of disability policies in TVETs is also envisaged, in close collaboration with the TVET Disability Mainstreaming Committee (DMC). In Nairobi, the most populated urban area (4.4 million inhabitants) in Kenya, an integral approach is promoted to favour both a social and an economic impact for vulnerable youth and young people with disabilities who attend vocational training centres. It is foreseen to improve the educational and psycho-social support services offered in the institutions and, at the same time, promote job placement and self-employment. Specifically, as far as the social aspect is concerned, the proposal aims at specializing (Training of Trainers / T.o.T.) the teachers, identified by the institutions themselves, in order to implement an adequate psycho-social support to the students through Lifeskills sessions, Counselling and sexual-reproductive education as envisaged by the teaching plan. A community awareness-raising action is also foreseen about the inclusion of people with disabilities in education and the provision of scholarships for students with special educational needs. The project plans the technical and financial support for the adjustment of the identified institutions infrastructure through the removal of architectural barriers. As far as the economic aspect is concerned, the proposal aims at specializing teachers for young people’s career guidance and access to labour market and promoting the organisation of forums between TVETs and local businesses, through the development of an inclusive Web app and an operational research on labour market. To promote the youth economic dynamism, the intervention promotes a self-employment and business incubator programme for the TVET students as well as the activation of labour inclusion pathways for people with disabilities. The proposed initiative results from the working group and coordination among NO ONE OUT, the lead applicant, and the project Partners in both Italy and Kenya. The proposal builds on a solid partnership that involves the public authority TVETA, Italian and Kenyan civil society organisations and the research institution Laboratorio ARCO PIN read more close
