Description

Kenya has a high youth unemployment rate: according to data (VaLi Strategic Plan 2020-2023) 80% of unemployed people are under 35 years of age and 90% of unemployed youth lack the vocational skills and/or soft skills required by the labor market. The main causes include: lack of coordination and dialogue between public and private actors, misalignment between training and labor market demands, fragmentation in the development of training programs, lack of technical and soft skills among young people, and limited access to technological resources. The Inn2win project, in line with MDGs 8 and 4 relevant to the area of Vocational Training-Entrepreneurial Employment, aims to respond to this issue by activating a multi-sectoral program through the promotion of inclusive pathways, alignment of vocational training with the world of work, and support for technological advancement, which can contribute to the employment development of the youth population in the Nairobi metropolitan area, including Kiambu, Machakos, and Kajiado counties. Specifically, the program aims to strengthen the services of the public vocational training system to foster job placement and entrepreneurship pathways in the area of digitization and technological innovation for vulnerable youth, with a focus on youth with disabilities and people who are survivors (or at risk) of gender-based violence (survivors). The initiative is specifically developed along three axes: Improving the competencies of the network of public and private actors for the coordination and promotion of vocational training services and skill matching at the national level; access by students in public institutions to career guidance services and inclusive and quality learning by integrating workbased learning opportunities into training programs at the regional level; and supporting the creation, activation and operation of business incubators in the area of digitization and technological innovation (innovation hubs) within public institutions for the start-up and operation of start-ups and enterprises. The proposal is based on two relevant cross-cutting elements: a) the inclusion of vulnerable people as a priority target. Given the experience of L'Africa Chiama, the proposing party, and NO ONE OUT, OSC partner, the action is aimed at the student population of vocational training institutions most accessible to the most disadvantaged segment of the youth population, through an inclusive approach towards people with disabilities and survivors; b) focus on the digitization and technological innovation sector. The sector is growing steadily in the Nairobi metropolitan area, an area that offers great opportunities in terms of employability and responding to contemporary challenges in the identified counties, which are characterized by urban and peri-urban areas with informal settlements and rural areas classified as arid and semi-arid areas (ASALs), and where public vocational training institutions note serious deficiencies, as revealed by the needs analysis. For the design and implementation of the project, a strategic partnership network was outlined because it is representative of the inclusive approach (local organizations DEK and Wangu Kanja), the involvement of public stakeholders (Ministry of Labor, National Authority TVETA and Marche Region), and the participation of for-profit technical entities (MG Innovation Hub and ViA Group S.r.l.). Active participation in the initiative by public and private stakeholders helps ensure the complementarity and sustainability of the action with respect to national and regional development policies and social and cultural dynamics. read more close
