Description
The proposal aims to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of the population living in the Karamoja region (Uganda), through integrated actions in the environmental sector in line with SDGs 2, 13 and 15. The initiative aims to mitigate the negative effects of climate change and improve the drought and soil degradation resilience of communities in Napak, Moroto, Nabilatuk and Nakapiripirit Districts. The need assessment demonstrated the need to reach, through a series of targeted actions, students, families residing in rural areas, agricultural producers and key figures in institutions to enable changes in the behaviour of individuals and in the responsiveness of institutions in one of the most vulnerable areas of the country in terms of climate, geography, social and political aspects. The initiative proposes three lines of synergetic action: 1) Strengthening the resilience and capacity of rural communities to manage natural and energy resources, through training activities for students from 30 schools in the area and neighborhood communities on climate-smart practices (meal preparation systems with improved kitchens, energy production from renewable sources, rainwater harvesting, agroforestry techniques). In the most water-stressed areas, groundwater monitoring systems will be installed and wells will be rehabilitated for use by schools and communities. Finally, the installation of meteorological stations in 4 Districts will increase the territorial coverage, today undersized, and the capacity of the warning systems in agreement with the National Meteorological Authority (UNMA), associating these actions with the training of technicians and members of local communities so as to allow autonomy in the production of meteorological and warning bulletin. 2) Support for the production and storage capacity of cereal and legume seeds. The extreme climatic variability recorded in the region is increasingly compromising the agricultural sector and exacerbating food insecurity: through collaboration with the National Organisation for Agricultural Research (NARO), training courses on the introduction of improved seeds, the adoption of storage practices and the implementation of exchanges of good practices between producers will be activated with a view to strengthening the production chain and the informal seed market. 3) Rehabilitation of river, rain and reforestation water harvesting systems (sand dams and valley tanks) to increase water availability and thus decrease pressure on resources. Rehabilitation of water harvesting structures will be carried out with the involvement of communities and districts to strengthen ownership and management. Specific reforestation of neighboring areas will be designed and implemented to improve soil health and retention capacity, with pastoral communities adjacent to the reservoirs as targets. The proposed initiative is the result of the working table between the CSOs NO ONE OUT and C&S, and project partners in Italy and Uganda. The proposal is based on a solid partnership involving national public bodies (UNMA and NARO), Ugandan civil society organisations (UCAA) and Italian for-profit actors (ETIFOR) with a focus on innovation. The institutions to which the beneficiaries belong are both educational (in an extensive network of primary and secondary schools) and district institutions, particularly in the environmental and water sector. The initiative will reach a total of 63,012 direct beneficiaries (majority female, 53%).
