Description

In Guinea, inadequate nutritional knowledge and opportunities for agricultural diversification, in the context of gender inequality and natural resource degradation, are at the root of high levels of chronic malnutrition and food insecurity, as well as rural-urban migration and out-migration, even in the face of growing urban demand for nutritious and healthy food, which farmers grouped in producer organisations (POs) are unable to meet. However, there are good experiences of PO services in high-potential agricultural supply chains and sustainable management of land, water and seed resources, albeit poorly documented and not yet leading to real transformation of food systems. As a result, there is a window of opportunity to support agroecological food and nutrition security pathways and to strengthen the capacity of producer organisations (POs) to more decisively pursue regenerative agricultural pathways with the help of digital transformation and effective marketing, as well as to support data-driven food policies of agroecological transition and new development and employment opportunities in key supply chains such as rice and horticulture for food sovereignty and nutrition security. International and local partners working in Guinea and the target areas (Fouta Djallon, Bofa and Cankan) have recognised expertise in implementation, development and research : LVIA in sustainable food systems, in training and support processes, and at the thematic level in agro-ecological horticulture and mangrove rice cultivation. CISV in supply chain structuring, monitoring and capacity building of POs. The same POs, CNOPG and FPFD, are active in the areas of aggregation and professionalisation of farmers, improving access to agricultural services and inputs, and dialogue on agricultural policies ; ADAM, a local NGO, in improving water management in mangrove farming, CISAO-UNITO on data collection, analysis, research and training in agroecology and APIO, an Italian digital start-up, on food traceability systems. The action aims to support 'access to sustainable, healthy and nutritious food and improved livelihoods through agroecological transition in Guinea'. To this end, the specific objective of the project is to 'contribute to the transformation of agri-food systems to improve the efficiency, inclusiveness and sustainability of the food system for communities living in the target areas', through the following activities R1: Improving agri-food diversification through a systems approach ; R2: Increased capacity and inclusiveness of producer organisations and market access with improved income opportunities through sustainable horticulture and mangrove rice production ; R3: Improved governance of agroecological food systems ; The project, worth 2,105,238.91 euros, will benefit more than 135,200 people in 5 prefectures in the 3 target areas, including 52,500 young people and more than 55% women: 44,960 people involved in productive diversification and resilience-building pathways, 35,254 people benefiting from improved agro-ecological services, income opportunities and market access, and 55,200 consumers, users and representatives of institutions, beneficiaries and actors of better information and governance of the food system in Guinea. The OSS2-focused initiative addresses the linkages between environmental degradation, family migration and gender inequalities, contributes to improved biodiversity, climate change adaptation, reduced food losses, increased knowledge and awareness of sustainability, and supports effective and inclusive decision-making processes. read more close

SDGs

  • 12.3 - By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses
  • 12.8 - By 2030, ensure that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature
  • 16.7 - Ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels
  • 2.1 - By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round
  • 2.2 - By 2030, end all forms of malnutrition, including achieving, by 2025, the internationally agreed targets on stunting and wasting in children under 5 years of age, and address the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women and older persons
  • 2.3 - By 2030, double the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, in particular women, indigenous peoples, family farmers, pastoralists and fishers, including through secure and equal access to land, other productive resources and inputs, knowledge, financial services, markets and opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment
  • 2.4 - By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality
  • 2.5 - By 2020, maintain the genetic diversity of seeds, cultivated plants and farmed and domesticated animals and their related wild species, including through soundly managed and diversified seed and plant banks at the national, regional and international levels, and promote access to and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge, as internationally agreed
  • 5.5 - Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life
