Description

The 36-month ”F.A.R.E/R.E.A.C.T” project will be implemented in five villages in the peri-urban area of Baidoa City in the Bay Region (South West State) of Somalia. It stems from the experience that ACF, Somali NGO READO, Zam Zam University and Italian company Genius Watter-along with national and district public and private stakeholders-have gained in initiatives to promote resilient agricultural models. The intervention offers a response limited access to water for agricultural production, low productivity of local farming systems, limited and poorly diversified livelihoods and household income sources, with specific gender barriers in accessing agricultural services and women limited economic participation in production activities. The strategy contributes to achieving water and food security and improving the livelihoods of smallholder farming households in the Bay Region (GO)- in the peri-urban setting-and is based on the community-wide adoption of a small-scale agribusiness system based on agroecological practices that can increase productivity, efficiency and yield while preserving production-related natural resources (soil and water) (SO). These objectives are pursued by acting on three components: (R1) By improving access to water through the introduction of Water Management and Conservation Systems (WMCs), water supply, storage and distribution infrastructure, and dissemination of Water Soil Conservation practices, farmers will increase agricultural productivity--conserving productive natural resources (water and soil) --while introducing more variety of crops, including vegetables. They will thus be able to produce year-round, freeing themselves from dependence on rainfall, which is increasingly scarce, and will achieve greater variety and volume of food production, for self-consumption and market. (R2) Direct interventions on production assets from an agroecological perspective and improvement of 'technical assistance provided by the state will enable farmers to further strengthen and diversify primary production, integrating complementary activities to agriculture (greenhouses, compost, forest nurseries, poultry), with a double value, nutritional and income generation. As an effect of increased food availability and income sources, farming households will be able to: a) improve their nutritional status-supported by broad-based awareness-raising activities on nutritional issues; b) sell the surplus produced, increasing household incomes and thus being able to acquire supplementary foods and services (health, education, etc.). Complementing the first two Outcomes (R3), the consolidation of food and income chainsthrough strengthening the management capacities of producer groups with the PGM (Producer Marketing Group) approach, the provision of facilities and equipment for food storage, processing and preservation, the ability of groups to manage commercial activities at the supply chain level, and access to credit and financial services tailored especially to the needs of women (VSLAs, community savings groups) will enable farmers to sell at more competitive prices, save and invest in scaling up their production activities. By feeding off each other, the three outcomes will enable households to improve their nutrition and hygiene practices (thus their health), productive assets (including water resources and soil), ability to save and sustainably manage productive activities, ultimately improving their own and their communities' resilience to climate shocks and crises. read more close

SDGs

  • 12.3 - By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses
  • 15.3 - By 2030, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world
  • 2.1 - By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round
  • 2.3 - By 2030, double the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, in particular women, indigenous peoples, family farmers, pastoralists and fishers, including through secure and equal access to land, other productive resources and inputs, knowledge, financial services, markets and opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment
  • 2.4 - By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality
  • 6.6 - By 2020, protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes
