Description

The project stems from the historical collaboration between Italian Fair Trade and Malawi's sugar supply chains. After the recent environmental disasters, sugarcane production suffered heavy losses, followed by an export stop imposed by the government, in order to strengthen the country's food supply. The project thus aims to support the cooperatives of sugarcane producers, and at the same time contribute to the national strategy on food security, making the cooperatives a point of reference for local communities. From the needs analysis identified in the needs assessment, it became clear that to date, Fairtrade-certified Small Producer Organisations (SPOs) are still suffering the effects of the environmental disasters in the Chikwawa and Nkhotakota districts. Thus, R.1 aims at sustainable food production, using the available arable land of the cooperatives' members to diversify production in favour of crops with a higher nutritional value. Food production will be targeted both for self-consumption by member families, but also for sale on a local scale. Particular attention will also be paid to environmental issues, as an implementation of Fairtrade's sustainable agriculture strategy. Investment will also be made in protein food production through the installation of aquaculture facilities: an experience already developed by the Phata SPO, through the Fairtrade Award, in recent years, which is intended to be replicated in other organisations. R.2, on the other hand, has a specific focus on training women in nutrition, in order to disseminate a more careful approach to diet preparation, especially for the youngest children, combating the malnutrition present in the Chikwawa and Nkhotakota areas. A very practical approach will be used, including cooking classes and the distribution of low-energy stoves. At the same time, training on water and sanitation (WASH) will take place to reduce the impact of gastrointestinal infections among children. In support of this activity, a plan for access to drinking water will be initiated with the installation of 7 wells (for the Kasinthula and Lakeshore SPOs) and the upgrading of the distribution network already created for the communities near the Phata SPO, through a reverse osmosis plant. The whole activity includes the special involvement of women, as caregivers in the households. R.3, on the other hand, intends to contribute to the strengthening of the governance of the 3 SPOs, through interventions aimed at the involvement of women as active actors in democratic decision-making. In addition, investment will be made in adult education in order to provide more opportunities for members to grow within the co-operative. In addition, with a view to improving household management, reducing dependency on sugarcane production, and creating more opportunities for farmers, the start-up capital fund will be increased, accompanied by a mentoring service for micro-enterprise/self-employment activities. In line with the 2030 Agenda, the project will contribute to increasing food security, promoting quality nutrition and sustainable agricultural practices (OSS.2); improving nutrition and hygiene practices, it will contribute to fostering greater access to clean water (OSS.6); and it will contribute to enhancing the role of women in the household and at work for the socio-economic development of the area (OSS.5). The project will be carried out by Fairtrade Italy and Fairtrade Africa - sister Organisations that are part of Fairtrade International, operating as a unicum - in collaboration with Agricane, a Malawi-based company specialising in support services in the sugarcane sector. The project is the result of a historic collaboration between Italian Fair Trade sector and the Malawian sugar supply chain. Following recent environmental disasters, sugarcane production has suffered heavy losses and the Government has imposed a ban on exports in order to strengthen the country's food supply. SDGs

  • 2.1 - By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round
  • 2.2 - By 2030, end all forms of malnutrition, including achieving, by 2025, the internationally agreed targets on stunting and wasting in children under 5 years of age, and address the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women and older persons
  • 2.3 - By 2030, double the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, in particular women, indigenous peoples, family farmers, pastoralists and fishers, including through secure and equal access to land, other productive resources and inputs, knowledge, financial services, markets and opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment
  • 2.4 - By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality
  • 5.5 - Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life
  • 6.1 - By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all
