Description

The CARE initiative was conceived to propose effective approaches to counteract the adverse phenomena caused by climate change. The area of intervention is located in Lebanon, in the Shouf Biosphere Reserve, which occupies around 5% of the entire Lebanese territory. Its traditional practices linked to agricultural, pastoral and forestry systems have contributed to shaping this rich territory, within which lie the two areas on which the project actions will focus: the Ramsar site of Aammiq, Lebanon's most important wetland area, and the forest area of West Beqaa, a rich territory with a purely agricultural vocation. The Aammiq wetland area is characterised by a considerable impoverishment of its rich biodiversity, accelerated by the effects of CC but also by invasive anthropogenic activities leading to water stress, water pollution, soil impoverishment and inappropriate agricultural practices. On the other side of the Beqaa, the Mediterranean forest has recently been devastated by major logging actions, seriously threatening natural habitats. The proposal builds on interventions carried out in recent years by Istituto Oikos and its partners, in particular to implement some of the priorities that emerged from the management plan for the Aammiq Ramsar site developed by Oikos as part of a UNDP initiative. In line with the targets of MDGs 6.6, 13.3, 15.3 and 15.9, CARE's objective is to improve the ecosystem of the target areas by working on agriculture as a bearer of environmental, social and health well-being. Led by Oikos, the partners IndyACT and ACS will pursue the objective through - tangible actions such as increasing the water ponds’ surface and planting with native species to restore depleted areas; - water, soil and biodiversity monitoring in order to develop their respective environmental protocols and compensate for the lack of sectoral strategic documents; - regenerative and less polluting agricultural practices to counteract the effects of inefficient irrigation practices, uncontrolled fertiliser use and other habits that impact soil fertility, water availability and general ecosystem health; - conversion of irrigation pumps from diesel to solar to reduce CO2 emissions and mitigate the effects of CC. To promote innovative approaches, Italian excellences from the private sector (Chianti Classico consortium) and the educational sector, bearers of virtuous experiences in respect of environmental conservation, have also been involved. In particular, structured paths aimed at the transfer of good practices and know-how will be proposed: - training on the active management of wetlands, which will bring the managers of Lebanese areas closer to best practices successfully experimented in several Italian territories to encourage the adoption of effective land planning tools; - a combined Italy/Lebanon training programme on sustainable, regenerative and water-conserving agriculture practices, favouring technology transfer through the involvement of the Italian profit and research world; - Financial education promoted by the partner AMS aimed at farmers and representatives of local businesses to facilitate access to credit and promote respect for environmental, social and governance factors to strengthen production and investment. - Visits to Italy to enable small-scale producers and farmers to familiarize with virtuous and prestigious realities of the Italian system and to encourage the transfer of knowledge and innovative approaches that can be replicated in the fight against CC. Awareness-raising events for citizens and an environmental education programme in schools led by the FSF partner will strengthen the awareness of young people and adults of the importance of conserving natural resources as a means of countering the devastating effects of CC. read more close
