Description

The project, led by CUAMM in Sierra Leone, has been developed in collaboration with local and international partners, namely, Saint Mary's Home of Charity (SMHC) University of Makeni (UNIMAK), the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care under Ministry of Health, Joseph Berton Technical and Vocational Institute (St Joseph TVET) and the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering “Guglielmo Marconi” (DEI) of the University of Bologna. The initiative intervenes in the professional education and employment sector, with the General Objective of Contributing to sustainable, inclusive and decent employment development for qualified young people in Sierra Leone, in compliance with OSS8 and national policies and priorities. The proposal responds to the mismatch between low productivity and employment in the labor market the country and the lack of healthcare workforce and qualified personnel, leveraging on CUAMM's experience in the sector. The specific objective of the project is to improve equitable and inclusive access to professional education and job opportunities in the health sector and related services for youths in Sierra Leone. The proposal adopts a peoplecentred approach as promoted by the agenda 2030, SDGs 8 and 4. The project will last 36 months and will be implemented in the districts of Western Area (Urban and Rural), Port Loko (Lunsar) Bombali (Makeni) and Pujehun (Pujehun). The healthcare sector has significant potential to offer a response to the lack of decent employment opportunities. To this end, the proposal works to enhance the academic offer and the quality of education through accredited academic and specialized courses and the development of new study pathways aligned to the market and health sector priorities (Result 1). The proposal promotes mechanisms for equity and the socio-economic inclusion of vulnerable young people, including youth from rural areas. By leveraging on technical and professional courses offered by technical institutes of SMHC e ST Joseph TVET (Technical Vocational Education and Training), the action will promote short courses with high employable outcomes in the healthcare and its related services (Result 2). At the same time, there is a need to strengthen synergies between public, private and non-for-profit actors to improve efficiency of the health sector in terms of employment and productivity (Result 3). The proposal has a strong gender component, promoting the inclusion of women in different educational and employment pathways, with a view to reducing gender inequalities. The direct beneficiaries of the project, 2620, comprise primarily young people aged 18-35 interested in educational opportunities and professional opportunities as well as public/private and non-for-profit actors. The indirect beneficiaries are 59292, including youth interested in health and/or TVET courses, families of students participating in the courses and healthcare personnel. read more close
