Description

The project "Food Security and Professional and Agroecological Training in Zimbabwe (SAFAZ)" aims to "Improve food security, particularly for women and children, in the province of Manicaland through diversified and ecologically sustainable agricultural production." The province of Manicaland is characterized by high rates of food insecurity and malnutrition, with the districts of Chipinge and Buhera being the most affected by the impact of climate change (low rainfall, soil erosion, desertification), which damages agricultural productivity, resulting in decreased and poorly diversified output. Farmers' dependence on chemical inputs and the use of hybrid seeds has weakened the crops. Producers act in isolation, without benefiting from economies of scale and without applying value-added techniques. The lack of income and the precariousness of agricultural production affect food availability for families and malnutrition rates, particularly for children under 5 years old. In this context, women could play a key role but are not involved in a structured way. To address these issues, the initiative proposes to develop a differentiated food system in the districts of Chipinge and Buhera in the province of Manicaland based on sustainable agriculture techniques and gender equity, focusing on two strategic lines: 1. Ensure access to food and a quality diet through the creation of 2 community gardens and a food program in 4 schools based on self-production, benefiting over 3,400 children and 180 families, while ensuring the creation of water reserves, the use of local seeds, and agroecological production methods to mitigate drought periods. The action will be integrated with: i) processes of prevention and combating malnutrition, and ii) strengthening of over 30 institutional committee officials and over 200 women from community support groups to improve community practices and behaviors. 2. Enhance income access for over 240 farmers through organized participation in agricultural cooperatives (Commodities associations) in sustainable value chains, selected through an analysis of the same. This action considers the entire value chain and includes the enhancement and strengthening of cultural heritage and the local seed system, access to inputs and professional training based on agroecology principles, and the creation of centers for processing and marketing. The action is integrated by: i) the creation of a climate weather analysis system that will guide the choices of associations and the policies of local authorities, and ii) strengthening women's groups and their access to structured dialogues with local authorities to ensure women's agency. Together, these two lines of action will contribute to greater agricultural production and a more varied diet for the most vulnerable people in the province of Manicaland, helping to reduce food insecurity in the province. The project is implemented by a consortium that brings together multiple skills. TDH IT will ensure the coordination of the partnership, NAZ, a local organization leading in combating food insecurity, GZU, a university expert in promoting agroecological methodologies, "Climate Smart Agriculture," and enhancing agricultural value chains, TriM, an Italian company expert in climate weather data analysis and dissemination, and Jengalab, an Italian association expert in innovative solutions for sustainable agriculture read more close

SDGs

  • 2.1 - By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round
  • 2.2 - By 2030, end all forms of malnutrition, including achieving, by 2025, the internationally agreed targets on stunting and wasting in children under 5 years of age, and address the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women and older persons
  • 2.3 - By 2030, double the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, in particular women, indigenous peoples, family farmers, pastoralists and fishers, including through secure and equal access to land, other productive resources and inputs, knowledge, financial services, markets and opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment
  • 2.4 - By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality
