Description

This intervention seeks to improve food security and nutrition by providing primary schoolchildren with nutritious, diversified meals while boosting local agricultural production and market opportunities for smallholder farmers, particularly women. The goal is to incentivise school attendance and enhance learning outcomes through better nutrition, while supporting sustainable agricultural practices. Key objectives include ensuring that schoolchildren have access to healthy meals, increasing agricultural productivity and linking school feeding programmes with local farming communities. Activities include providing 28,000 children with diversified meals made from locally grown foods, raising awareness about nutrition, and developing school and community capacities for managing meal programmes. Additionally, the project will strengthen smallholder farmers’ capacity to produce diverse, nutritious foods through access to better inputs, training in sustainable practices, and market linkages, with a focus on empowering women. Farmer-based organisations will be enhanced to improve market access and financial literacy, and microfinance opportunities will be created to support smallholder growth. The intervention also promotes climate smart agriculture and integrated natural resource management to ensure long-term sustainability. By linking nutrition and local agriculture, the programme fosters a mutually beneficial relationship that improves food security, economic opportunities and educational outcomes. read more close
