Description

The project "Support to the Modernization of Fishing Ports and Vocational and Education Training in the Blue Economy in Tunisia" is part of Bleue Tunisie program, which aims to develop a sustainable and competitive blue economy by enhancing efficient coastal areas that respect marine heritage. This program falls under the Tunisia-Italy cooperation memorandum for 2021-2023 and aligns with the Tunisia 2035 strategy and the AICS guidelines for rural development and food security. With a total budget of 33 million euros, out of which 25 million as soft loans and 8 million as grants, the project includes two main components. The first one, i.e. this initiative, involves the Sidi Daoued, El Kraten, Mahres, Skhira, and El Keft ports modernization, as well as the rehabilitation of VET centers in Sfax and Zarzis, for a total amount of 27.5 million euros. The second component, managed by CIHEAM Bari with a budget of 5.5 million euros, aims to integrate the ports into the local socioeconomic fabric, improving employment opportunities and supporting artisanal fishing. The main objective of this initiative is to promote the blue economy by developing competitive, sustainable, and inclusive coastal areas, addressing challenges such as the inefficiency of port infrastructure and the lack of an adequate vocational training system. The aim is to stimulate investments and enhance competitiveness through an integrated and territorial approach. Direct beneficiaries include coastal areas residents, governmental and local authorities, as well as individual and fishermen association. It will also involve marine workers and private sector actors engaged in the processing and marketing of marine products. Finally, the initiative targets young people trained in the blue economy, with a particular focus on women and people with disabilities. read more close
