Description

The long experience of the Institute for Bioeconomy of the National Research Council (IBE-CNR) in Niger, through the projects ANADIA Niger (AID 9913.01.3), for the period 2012-2016, and ANADIA 2 (AID 010848), for the period 2017-2021, in collaboration with the National Meteorological Service (DMN), has enabled the development and implementation of an innovative agro-meteorological assistance mechanism for rural producers. The PRIMESA initiative aims, therefore, to extend the approach of previous projects at the national level, involving 30 municipalities in 4 regions of the country, improving food security and rural production performance. To this end, the initiative aims to achieve three outcomes: (i) Niger's national and decentralised institutions responsible for agro-meteorological surveillance in the country are strengthened. ii) A climate service is developed, validated, made operational, available and integrated into the agricultural practices of the target communities in the 4 regions. The target population of the initiative, expected to last 36 months, will be the most vulnerable rural populations, supported in reducing the risk of loss of agricultural production (and thus food insecurity) as a result of climate variability and in the process of climate change adaptation; local governments equipped with operational tools for drought and flood risk governance, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation planning; national technical services that will benefit from training, technical assistance, innovative equipment and methodologies for drought and flood risk assessment and monitoring. read more close

SDGs

  • 13.3 - Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning
  • 2.4 - By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality
  • 2.a - Increase investment, including through enhanced international cooperation, in rural infrastructure, agricultural research and extension services, technology development and plant and livestock gene banks in order to enhance agricultural productive capacity in developing countries, in particular least developed countries
