Description
In Burkina Faso, the production of white meat is widely practiced. Poultry is raised in large quantities to satisfy a growing demand for animal protein, in a country where the production of red meat from small and large transhumant ruminant farms is brought to its knees by terrorism. The availability of fodder and concentrated feed for intensive breeding is limited and production costs are excessive. Rabbit farming requires less space and resources than poultry and the production of emissions is reduced. Rabbit farming is an activity that can be managed with low investments and is often practiced at family level. Chicken production is more extensive and industrialized but presents greater problems from the point of view of the control of infectious diseases relevant to public health, such as avian influenza. The initiative aims to enhance the productivity and sustainability of rabbit farming, which presents fewer risks to human health, through research, training and development activities. SOAMBA, rabbit in the Mooré language, is part of the LAPIN 8x1000 IRPEF fund project, implemented by NGO Tamat. SOAMBA will be implemented by the Department of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences (UNIPG) in partnership with Tamat and other important Burkinabe partners in the field of training and animal production. The expected results: 1. setting up of 2 genetic centers for rabbit farming, 2. training of field technicians and breeders, 3. setting up of experimental farms in the pilot villages. The beneficiaries involved will be technicians and students of animal husbandry involved in the research, training and dissemination of the results and 40 breeders who will be accompanied in the creation of small-scale rabbit farms.
