Description
Since 1955, the constant and continuous presence of the Italian Archaeological Mission in the Swat Valley, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (KP), has allowed to achieve remarkable results in the field of archaeology, restoration and museography as well as to acquire an in-depth knowledge of the complex contextual issues. On this basis, this project aims to protect, promote and enhance the cultural and natural heritage of KP by reducing the risks from the impact of climate change with a view to economic development through vocational training and ecotourism (sustainable and responsible tourism in the naturalistic context). To support national development plans, the project intends to contribute to: - inclusive and sustainable economic growth of the community through ecotourism; - growth of the capacity to adapt to climate change by protecting and preserving the heritage; -creation of both employment opportunities, through certified on-the-job vocational training, and income opportunities by supporting entrepreneurship and strengthening the ecotourism supply chain. The project is developed in KP which, in addition to having an extremely rich cultural heritage, is also one of the areas most affected by the 2022 floods due to damage suffered by tourist accommodation facilities with consequent high unemployment rate. In particular, from the Swat Valley to the archaeological area of Taxila KP, around an integrated route (about 125 km) that connects 8 archaeological sites through ancient roads and paths. The project is in line with the National Strategy Vision 2025, with the Annual Plan 2023-2024, with the National Climate Resilience and Adaptation Plan 2023-2030 (NAP) and with the National “Skills for All” Strategy. Furthermore, it is consistent with the National Tourism Strategy 2022, and fits into the Resilient Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction Framework (4RF) responding to the needs identified in the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) following the floods of 2022. Beneficiaries: University students, community members, officials of provincial authorities, tourists and KP’s population. Involvement of the Italian System: The project will be carried out by the University Ca’ Foscari of Venice, in partnership with the Italian NGO ISCOS. The project will consolidate the activities of Ca’ Foscari which, since 2021, has been co-managing the Italian Archaeological Mission for the excavation campaigns and, on the other hand, will make use of the quality assurance of ISCOS, which has been operating in Pakistan for more than 20 years in the vocational training sector, with expertise in workers’ rights, women’s rights and against child labor.
