Description

The initiative aims to contribute to the reduction of maternal and infant mortality, with a particular focus on the perinatal period strengthening and implementing the work of the Perinatology Network of the Central Region (RPRC)of Burkina Faso. This will be achieved by significantly improving the skills and capacities of healthcare personnel, thus ensuring better quality obstetric and neonatal care. The project targets healthcare professionals, including midwives, nurses, and doctors working in the region’s birthing centers, as well as students interested in specializing in perinatology. Additionally, it aims to support selected maternity wards and healthcare facilities in a pilot project, with a particular focus on rural and disadvantaged areas. To achieve these objectives, the following key actions are proposed: 1. Strengthening the perinatal network of the Central Region (RPRC) through an integrated approach, which includes: (i) optimizing the central hub of the perinatology network, located in a building provided by the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene (MSPH). This hub will be equipped with all necessary office and technological equipment to create a highly functional and efficient working environment for administrative and medical staff, ensuring smooth communication and effective coordination with the network managers in the 20 participating facilities; (ii) providing structured and continuous support to the mother-child relationship, which will be realized through regular meetings between maternity units and the network’s reference sites. These meetings will foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing among network members and stakeholders, improving the quality of the support offered to families and ensuring cohesive and integrated network management; (iii) informing, engaging, and promoting the network’s activities through the creation and implementation of a communication plan aimed at families and perinatal health professionals, contributing to the creation of a cohesive and well-informed community. 2. Enhancing the skills of healthcare personnel. Training courses will be organized on essential obstetric and neonatal care and emergency management with the aim of training a total of 400 healthcare professionals. The courses will cover obstetric emergencies, neonatal resuscitation, neonatal infections, nutritional support, and the use of perinatal management algorithms. The lessons will include practical sessions, simulations, and interactive case studies involving both national and international staff. 3. Establishing academic programs in Perinatology with the goal of training qualified specialists to contribute to improving perinatal care and reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Specifically, the following programs are planned: (i) a university master’s degree in Perinatology at the Institut Supérieur Privé de Santé Saint Camille de Lellis (IPSCA) in collaboration with the University of Florence (UNIFI). This two-years program, which will enrol 50 students per edition, will be divided into four semesters and offer a total of 120 credits (2400 hours of teaching). The Master’s program will include theoretical lectures, hospital internships in neonatology and obstetrics at international facilities, and individual research work; (ii) a University Diploma in Perinatology, also at IPSCA and in collaboration with project partners and relevant Ministries, offering a total of 50 credits and 1000 hours of training to educate 300 professionals over the course of the project. The course will include theoretical lessons and hospital internships. 4. Updating neonatal care services as a pilot experience: (i) the implementation of kangaroo care services and Newborn Care Corners (NBCC) in 13 maternity wards by preparing the physical structures, acquiring the necessary equipment, and training staff; (ii) the provision of 5 ambulances dedicated to neonatal transport, managed by the Regional Emergency Medical Se read more close
