Description
The Project aims to improve food security in the area, basically through increasing yields, crop diversification, improving marketing and strengthening of the institutions. The intervention reflects the problems analysis highlighted by Plan Trifinio, a SICA's trinational body, which is the Project's counterpart. The activities, lasting two years and amounting to 950,000 euros, focus on the development of horticulture and on the adoption of innovative environmental low-impact techniques and technologies. The initiative provides new opportunities for the economically weakest groups, represented by small farmer families, focusing on the creation of market associations. The outputs of the initiative are: a) sustainable vegetable production and the introduction of research, technical knowledge and technologies suitable for sustainable family horticulture; b) the organization of Small Farmers' Associations for business; c) the support for local institutions that play a role in the socio-economic promotion of the Trifinio area, enhancing local production and partnerships between the local stakeholders. These results are expected to be achieved through the strengthening of the INNOVATEC-SISTAGRO Research and Training Center and technical assistance targeting the Center's staff and the farmers.
