Description
In this funding proposal, FAO proposes a project that aims to develop an inclusive, dynamic and competitive value chain of small producers who in the next future will provide the Manica Agro-Food Center (CAAM, AID 12542) the products needed and thus strengthen the fruit and vegetable and agro- industrial sectors in the Beira Corridor. Considering that the main objective of the CAAM is to collect, process and market fruit and vegetables in the central area of the country, this project will develop all aspects of these two value chains, including the promotion of (i) investments in fams, (ii) input and development of services, (iii) quality production and collection, (iv) pre- processing, aggregation and marketing, always applying Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards and promoting sustainable business models. The first result of the intervention will be an increase in production and productivity; in particular during the 3 years of support to the production 3,000 small holder farmers (SHF) will be targeted and 6,000 ha of production for cash and food crops; this increased production will continue after the conclusion of the project. The expected outcome after five years is 18,000MT of fresh produce to supply the processing industry which will create critical production supply to the CAAM once it is built. Efficiency of small holder famer production will be the second output with the project aiming to reduce post-harvest losses to less than 10 percent and facilitate aggregation at both producers' level (agri- geo-cooperatives and groups) and collection points (small storage/pre- processing facilities in collaboration with UNIDO) to reduce the cost of production, harvest and transport. Finally, this project aims to improve the value chain governance and supply chain as well as strengthen linkages with off takers. This intervention will require a 5 million EUR investment within a 3-year period, starting from January 2023.
