Description

The project originates from the commitment of the CIHEAM Bari Institute in Sub-Saharan Africa in its role as coordinator of the regional program WATDEV (Climate Smart WATer Management and Sustainable DEVelopment for food and agriculture in North-East Africa), an initiative of high strategic value aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural models able to deal with the consequences of climate change. The project aims to strengthen the capacities of the Ministries of Agriculture and Natural Resources of the Eastern Sudanese states - Red Sea and Kassala - in the management of water resources for agricultural use as well as ensure technical and financial support to small local producers, using innovative sustainable practices and solutions, in the production sectors of the agro-food, fishing, breeding and animal husbandry chains. The initiative takes the form of an integrated approach (water, zootechnics, veterinary medicine, agriculture, grazing environment), taking advantage of the set of skills that CIHEAM has at its disposal. By investing in support for the social and economic development of small producers in the sectors mentioned, the selected strategy intends to concentrate the pivot of its action on this fundamental segment of economic operators, which represent an economic connective tissue and a determining factor for social stabilization at community level, taking also in consideration the vulnerabilities to which they are exposed in terms of food insecurity. read more close
