Description

The Iraqi private sector development is restrained by an economic ecosystem largely dominated by the oil sector and state-owned enterprises. A challenging business environment, a complex regulatory system and a poor access to credit and loan services make it difficult for start-up and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to formalize, expand and thrive. Moreover, many entrepreneurs lack of business management skills and financial literacy, which makes it more complex to start-up businesses, including in the green economy. Therefore, existing and nascent MSMEs struggle to become competitive within national and international markets. Despite all the challenges, MSMEs encompass enormous potential to grow and to create decent job opportunities. The initiative, managed by ILO, will contribute to the creation of more and better employment opportunities in southern Iraq through the improvement of MSMEs regulatory and policy framework and entrepreneurial skills, with the objective of unleashing their potential, motivate them to formalize and to explore and invest in the green economy. The initiative will also capacitate and empower national/subnational financial and non-financial institutions to better support MSMEs to grow ad thrive. The initiative foresees the establishment of a Steering Committee, whose members will include the Embassy of Italy in Iraq, the Italian Cooperation, the concerned ministries, social partners, the national Chamber of Commerce and the Central Bank of Iraq. read more close
