Description
“GEA” derives from the word Γῆ which, in ancient Greek, means Mother Earth, and it’s used to express the naturalness of differences in terms of cultural traditions and biodiversity on the planet. The present Education for Global Citizenship (ECG) initiative, promoted by 23 partners including Italian civil society organizations (OSC) with Territorial Bodies (ET), Universities, Associations, aims to increase, in young Italians (15-25 years) and in the educating community (teachers and decision makers) of the Province of Lecce, the necessary skills to promote sustainable development and an inclusive community, free from any discrimination, aimed at sustainable development and lifestyle, human rights, gender equality , promotion of a peaceful and non-violent culture and enhancement of cultural diversity. The 2021 OECD International Report, which probes how ready young Italians are to live in a globalized world, to adapt to diversity and above all to respect it, shows that Italians are in lastplace among advanced countries in terms of ability to understand the perspectives of the others. They are second-last for their interest in learning more about other cultures, third-last among industrialized countries for the respect of people of other cultures and again last for the ability to adapt their way of thinking and conduct to the cultural context. This phenomenon, which impacts Italy and especially the southern areas, which have the highest rate of educational poverty, leads to hate speech and discrimination against foreign people, disabled, women, gender fluid - without neglecting the generational discrimination – who, in the territory of the Province of Lecce, see themselves deprived of some fundamental rights (access to housing, equal wages, degrading treatments). ECG education is one of the fundamental tools to counter these factors and offer people from different segments of society the opportunity to train on discrimination issues and actively experience opportunities for social and cultural interaction. This initiative aims to help improve the inclusiveness of the province's society and change the perception of diversity, especially among the youth population, in order to transform it into human and cultural enrichment. Characteristics of the initiative are: the intersectional approach to discrimination which is treated in all its forms, and the multilevel action of the intervention that starts from formal and academic contexts, passing through non-formal education, implemented in secondary schools and in marginal contexts (young neets, foreigners, Roma), to arrive at the informal learning, generated by opportunities for social and cultural interaction, according to the principle of “not leave anyone behind”. Each activity is planned to be inclusive and accessible, thanks to the involvement of several partners who are experts in physical and mental accessibility, and eco-sustainability. This initiative, expression of a broad and locally rooted partnership, was built with a participatory approach and provides generative actions, which will produce long-term effects, thanks to the project outputs that will continue to be disseminated and used after the end of the same and to the skills acquired by all beneficiaries, that will affect the well-being of society as a whole. The direct recipients of the proposal are: R1 University Professors, University Students, Secondary School Teachers, Decision Makers; R2 Young people 15-25; R3 Citizens of the Province of Lecce.
