Description

The project is aimed at increasing public awareness on the issues of international development cooperation and on the 17 Sustanaible Development Goals. The sociologist Ilvo Diamanti, while presenting the IX Report (2021) of the Carta di Roma association, commented a Good news: immigrants are no longer news. Despite the reduction in media presence, in Italy as in Europe the debate on migration continues to be highly polarized. In political discourses, an “us versus them” narrative is adopted, where migrants and refugees become the scapegoat for every major social problem (real or imaginary). The spread of divisive and anti migrant thinking poses a threat to democratic values. The narratives that find their way into the public debate are in fact those that define the frameworks within which politically acceptable measures are built. For example, dealing with the issue of migration, if a narrative of invasion, threat and clandestinity is built, the political response can only adopt concepts such as border defense and security. The project A whole different story, lasting 24 months, intends to contribute to overcoming these divisive narratives through the leadership of the educating communities and, above all, of young people. Thanks to the activities of the project, these two main targets will see their skills strengthened to combat the different expressions of hatred and intolerance towards migrants, and will be able to start a multi-stakeholder process of narrative change on the issue of migration through a strategic communication approach (Results). In particular, the project aims to encourage the development and application of skills among young people in 16 Italian territories for an effective civic engagement oriented towards the inclusion and overcoming of divisive narratives, hatred and intolerance towards people with a migratory background (Specific Objective). The project strategy is based on the promotion of Global Citizenship Education and on the innovative approach presented in the Narrative change kit, a practical tool to reframe the debate on the narrative of migration developed by the German organization ICPA - International Center for Policy Advocacy and made available in Italian within the Never Alone initiative. This approach aims to open a dialogue and involve that part of the population not particularly aligned or interested in the topic, and which is therefore more influenced by the media, by how they present the phenomena and by what public opinion thinks about them. Defined as a “movable middle”, this portion of the population has a strong potential in the attempt to produce a change, constituting a real “political and cultural balance”: in Italy it comprises about 48% of the population. Involving more the “movable middle” does not mean excluding the other interlocutors but working in order to widen and balance the debate as much as possible. The project will involve teachers, students, universities, associations, migrant background networks and local authorities that offer opportunities for civic engagement to the new generations (Target) in 14 provinces / metropolitan cities, those that according to MIUR statistics see the greatest presence of students of non-Italian citizenship . ICPA proposes to develop dialogue and communication strategies following three principles of strategic communication: Presence (building a broad and constant presence in the public debate, especially throughwork with media and social networks), Immersion (socializing messages in the community, in networks, through the direct involvement of the target and events) and Power (working to obtain changes in the rules, through policy and legal advocacy). read more close
