Description

In line with the Three-year Programming and Policy Planning Document 2019-2021 of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), the present Initiative aims at contributing to the SDG 3 by improving the health and wellbeing of the South Darfur population, offering an integrated, essential and high quality healthcare response to the most vulnerable groups. The objective will be achieved through a strategy that integrates together several levels of intervention, with an eye to responding as thoroughly as possible to the complex and multidimensional needs of the Country - all while carrying on the work already set out during the AID11721 and AID11994 initiatives, which enabled the EMR Paediatric Centre in Darfur to resume its activities after nine years since its closure for security reasons. The complexity of the Sudanese context and in particular of the South Darfur State, burdened both by structural problems and by the negative impact of protracted and cyclical crises, has eroded the populations resilience and worsened their health status, which is further exacerbated by the lack of basic infrastructure and access to potable water. Deteriorating living conditions lead to a degeneration of people’s health, who therefore become easy prey for epidemics and diseases which could otherwise be avoided. The lack of knowledge around good hygienic, nutritional and sanitary practices contributes to worsen the already poor health conditions of the most fragile individuals. The most vulnerable subjects remain children, alongside the IDP and refugee groups who have even less opportunities to sustain themselves adequately. In light of the main needs identified in the context, EMR has opted to develop a strategy which branches out in different directions to reach 3 results: ? Strengthening access to free and high quality health services for the pediatric population through the provision of outpatient pediatric services, the hospitalization of specific patients and the screening and Allegato 3 Modello Documento Unico di Progetto 6 referral activities of cases treatable in other facilities. The main targets are children aged 0-14, but the families of the patients treated for free at the EMR Paediatric Centre will also benefit from the initiative by saving precious financial resources that would otherwise be spent to cure their sick children - a positive impact on the family finances which will help in particular the most poverty-stricken sections of the population. ? Disseminating correct sanitary and nutritional practices through the training of Community Health Promoters and the consequent hygiene and health promotion activities to be carried out with adults, mothers or chaperons of the patients who will increase their awareness on the importance of a timely access to treatment and of correct preventive behaviours. The families of the patients will also therefore indirectly benefit of the awareness-raising activities that will focus on the principles of a balanced diet, breastfeeding, the importance of spacing out births, basic hygiene, the importance of quickly reaching a hospital or a first-aid facility etc. Thus, they will acquire a better understanding of the pivotal role of a correct nutrition to avoid the resurgence of illness both in children and in mothers. ? Training the national health staff of the Paediatric Centre both theoretically and practically, which will indirectly benefit the national health system that will then avail of trained health personnel. The trained staff will then have the opportunity in the future to be employed in other public health facilities. read more close
