Description

The project "EASY WE - Empowerment and Skills for Youth Employment and Women's Empowerment in Ethiopia," presented by VIDES in ATS with Co.P.E, and in partnership Simurg, Ingegneria Senza Frontiere and Visitatoria AES, aims to promote a system of high quality, equable, and inclusive vocational and technical training, responsive to the needs of the labor market, targeting those most excluded, with particular attention to women. The initiative aligns with OECD/DAC Gender Equality policies and Aid to Environment for the promotion of gender equality and sustainable development, as well as with SDG 4 - Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all; SDG 5 - Gender Equality; and SDG 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth. The change intended to be generated by the project concerns the quality of vocational training, the inclusiveness of access, and the alignment of vocational training with labor market needs to facilitate entry for young people, with particular attention to women. To this end, a vocational training strategy will be implemented, which also includes the provision of short courses tailored to market needs, immediately usable in companies, through support for public-private partnerships, or through self-employment, promoted individually and cooperatively. This strategy was developed based on a needs analysis conducted by the partnership in close collaboration with local entities and local authorities responsible for Technical and Vocational Education and Training-TVET. This analysis highlighted several significant issues that hinder young people from entering the labor market, which the project aims to address: 1) Gender social inequality in empowerment and economic activity. 2) Significant imbalance between job demand and supply due to the lack of alignment between labor market needs and vocational training programs (skill mismatch). 3) High rate of youth underemployment and high incidence of informal, unprotected, and poorly paid work. In the short and medium term, the initiative aims to achieve the specific objective of increasing the number of professionally qualified young people and young women for insertion into the labor market and entrepreneurship. The proposed activities are divided into two outcomes. The first aims to strengthen TVET training provision in the target regions. The second aims to improve access to the labor market for young people, particularly young women, with professional skills in IT, fashion design, Secretarial and Office Administration, and Caregiving. These sectors were chosen based on their high demand from the local labor market and their attractiveness to the target group. The project includes updating the curricula of short courses and teaching materials based on market research and the permanent observatory on the analysis of training needs specifically created; teacher training updates; operational technical enhancement of 4 vocational training centers; guiding young people into the workforce in line with the OECD-DAC; 11330 Vocational training; 16020 Job creation. The target group consist of 3,425 young people aged 18 to 30 and 40 teachers aged 25 to 50, totaling 67% women. The vocational training schools involved have been selected to cover 4 regions of Ethiopia Allegato 2_Modello Documento Unico di Progetto_DUP_Bando Promossi 2023 9 (Tigray, Addis Ababa, Oromia; Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples of the South) in order to ensure the inclusion of young people in the most vulnerable areas, including Tigray, which has emerged from a year of internal conflict. read more close
