Description
The project aims to facilitate the access of women and youth in the Addis Ababa urban area to employment and decent work opportunities, including in micro-entrepreneurship, in line with SDG 8.5. Through supporting genderinclusive infrastructure and organizations (16020) with a participatory approach, opportunities for learning, vocational training and internships (11330) will be increased thus promoting gender equality (15180), in line with OSS 4.3 and 5.6. In Ethiopia, unemployment is more prevalent in large urban areas than in rural ones: the unemployment rate for women in urban areas is twice that of men in 2022, 35% compared to 17.2%for men. Addis Ababa has the highest youth unemployment rate at 27.7%, and female unemployment is 22.7%. The needs analysis revealed the necessity to strengthen the skills and capacities of training centers, both governmental and nongovernmental, in providing support services for inclusive economic growth, and to adopt an integrated and gender-sensitive approach to the creation and development of micro-enterprises, access to employment opportunities and training, and to remove gender-related barriers to women's participation in the labor market. The project will focus on the manufacturing industry, particularly the textile, food, and coffee sectors, which are considered priorities by the Ethiopian Investment Commission for their growth and trade development. The project's integrated approach includes three pillars of intervention: strengthening the capacities and skills of training institutions in Addis Ababa (R1), managerial and technical training for women and youth (R2), and promoting their participation in the labor market (R3). The total number of direct beneficiaries is: 4,930 persons and 5 organizations. The first pillar (R1) will involve the Coffee Training Center, the Creative Hub, two government Vocational Training centers, and the training center of the Ethiopian NGO Women in Self Employment (WISE) through the purchase of modern and digitalized equipment, training of trainers, and technical assistance from Italian partners and Ethiopian experts. This will improve the quality of their services, particularly integrated managerial and technical training services that will be offered to women and youth in vulnerable conditions (R2), including the development and design of products in manufacturing sectors with high untapped potential. For example, in the coffee sector, there can be innovation in the development of diversified products; in the food sector, ingredients for healthy nutrition, for celiacs, for diabetics and people with heart conditions. In the textile sector, products that combine tradition and innovation using eco-sustainable and recycled materials could be created. Digitalization will be promoted through specific training courses and access to job opportunities will be facilitated through training and internships. Finally, by reducing barriers that limit women's participation in the labor market (R3) through community awareness, offering reproductive health services, combating gender-based violence, and providing Allegato 2_Modello Documento Unico di Progetto_DUP_Bando Promossi 2023 8 childcare services to enable mothers to participate in work activities, the project will promote the participation of women and youth in the labor market in an inclusive and dignified manner. The project will be implemented in partnership with three organizations specialized in the intervention sectors: 1) the Ethiopian NGO WISE, active for over 25 years in the socio-economic empowerment of women; 2) The Italian Chefs Federation – Lady Chef Compartment; 3) the company Modafricacraft, specialized in ethical and sustainable fashion and fair trade with a tailoring process based on recycling and upcycling to minimize waste and scraps.
