Description

The SAFE Project – Food Security, Supply Chain, and Eco-Resilience, presented by COMI with partners UNIBO, ISFMI, VSF-IT, ArcoPin, with the local counterpart Agrisenergy and local partners IREF, POSTE DE SANTE NDAO, PafilKaf, GIE, and USSEIN, aims to contribute to ensuring food security, improving child malnutrition, and increasing the income of small and medium farmers and herders in the Kaffrine Region (Senegal). The intended change focuses on food security, identified as a key element for the social and economic development of the country. This strategy was born from a needs analysis conducted by the partnership in close collaboration with the local community of the Kaffrine Region, which highlighted several issues: • The current limited capacity of the rural community to respond to the challenges faced by Senegalese agriculture as a result of climate change; • Access to water, both for irrigation and potability; • The use of traditional agricultural techniques that limit productivity; • Poor access to markets and added value, which do not allow for improved profitability of farmers; • The living conditions of children, especially the vulnerable group of Talibé, who are at risk of undernutrition and malnutrition. The project will promote production techniques and models that include diversified crops, efficient use of water resources, and greater resilience to climate change, which can be used by farmers and herders. These models also focus on animal welfare, Climate Smart approaches, development, application, and/or transfer of new technologies applied to the agri-food sector, and can help make the environment-nutrition-health-work nexus a reality (hydroponic greenhouse, wells, and solar panels, biodigester for producing natural fertilizer with reduced carbon emissions). To strengthen productivity and market access, the intervention will seek to optimize and relaunch an existing milk collection and processing center to make it more competitive in the market. It will also provide funding and technical support for scaling up existing businesses or developing new food businesses, especially those managed by women under 46 and young people, with the goal of creating more job opportunities and increasing income. Allegato 2_Modello Documento Unico di Progetto_DUP_Bando Promossi 2023 9 Additionally, the intervention will improve the supply chain by introducing IoT (Internet of Things) solutions to enhance the process from cultivation to production, transformation, and commercialization of products. The intervention promotes an agro-ecological approach, directing investments towards diversified, resilient, and sustainable productions in line with the 13 principles of agroecology as stated in the 2019 FAO High-Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) report. It supports responsible agricultural practices that respect biodiversity, encourages social inclusion, and entrepreneurial autonomy, especially for women in the agricultural sector. Regarding the improvement of children's living conditions, child protection, the fight against malnutrition, and promoting access to food for all in terms of both quantity and quality, the intervention proposes the implementation of an integrated model that addresses both the living conditions of Talibé children (through the improvement and strengthening of the Quranic schools they reside in and targeted socio-health interventions) and those of children under 5 years with GAM (Global Acute Malnutrition), proposing interventions to strengthen the capacity of the community and health workers in combating and preventing GAM. read more close
