Description
The project SECOND LIFE will be implemented in the cities of Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa, where the lead organization has long operated and established close relationships with local authorities. This project stems from Allegato 2_Documento Unico di Progetto_DUP_Bando Promossi 2023 8 the experience CIFA has developed over the years in waste valorization, a sector offering employment opportunities even for vulnerable individuals. The project partners include the Federal TVET Agency (FTVETA) in Ethiopia and, in Italy, the Higher Technical Institute for Life Biotechnology and AREA s.a.s., for developing and delivering new professional training courses in waste management. The Industrial Park Development Corporation (IPDC) in Ethiopia, which currently encompasses 13 Industrial Parks nationwide, represents a structured pool of national and international companies needing sustainable and lawful waste management practices, creating job opportunities for trained beneficiaries. ERICA, an Italian cooperative specialized in waste disposal design, has collaborated with CIFA in Ethiopia and Djibouti. Additionally, the local NGO PROPRIDE in Ethiopia operates in the two intervention areas, working to empower women, people with disabilities, and marginalized groups. With the involvement of ISCOS Emilia Romagna and CETU, the Ethiopian union, the project will also target IP companies to promote decent work and good practices regarding employee treatment, including those involved in waste disposal. The project addresses the need to create decent employment in sectors offering economic opportunities for the country while respecting environmental sustainability. The solid waste management sector meets these requirements, ensuring improved environmental and health conditions. The project's overarching goal is to promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. Specifically, it aims to strengthen the vocational training system in Ethiopia's green economy sector, contributing to building new competencies in waste management and the social and labor inclusion of vulnerable groups. This will be achieved through capacity building for the two pilot TVETs in Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa, developing curricula for levels 1 to 5 to create professionals capable of managing the entire recycling chain and transferring inclusive, diversity-respectful teaching approaches. The TVETs will also be empowered to offer career guidance to graduates and attract financial resources to make strategic choices and enhance new services. The project's second component will work within the two target Industrial Parks in Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa, informing and raising awareness among managers and workers and strengthening the IPs' capacities to manage and dispose of waste correctly. The third component aims to support the training-to-employment transition, strengthen existing collector cooperatives (SMEs), and create new international managerial figures. The project will ensure continuous support to the two key partners, the Federal TVET Agency and the Industrial Park Development Corporation, so that every activity is widely shared and understood, and the introduced innovations, including technological ones, are sustainable beyond the project's end.
