The “AKLI Baladi” (Arabic for Eat Local) project aims to contribute to the development of inclusive, sustainable and resilient urban food policies in Palestinian cities in the West Bank. This action stems from the willingness of some Italian cities twinned with homologous Palestinian municipalities in the West Bank to accompany their sister-cities at a time of great criticality by supporting them in strengthening local food policies, the main way to ensure the right to adequate food for their citizens. A fundamental right that must be all the more guaranteed at a time when the Gaza war has had reflected effects in the neighbouring West Bank, including the abrupt and sudden rise in unemployment rates of the Palestinian population and further difficulties to the mobility of people and food goods. The proposed actions are based on well-established past partnerships, represent implementations or reinforcement of past actions however each has its own peculiarity of innovation and capacity for change, both individually and in coordination with each other. The state of security in the West Bank Palestinian Territories has been taken into account in the design, specifically selecting governorates that do not present high risks of instability at this time, contemplating actions that can be implemented mainly remotely in the first few years. The objective of the project is to strengthen the governance of local food system actors in the governorates of West Bank (Palestinian Authority). This objective will be achieved through three main strands: 1) Strengthening “rural-urban linkages” interventions useful for connecting urbanisation-foodagriculture in the governorates of Bethlehem and Jericho; 2) Strengthening the food governance of Palestinian territorial authorities and their multi-actor networks, in the aforementioned governorates in synergy with their Italian counterparts; 3) Improved educational and training provision on urban food policies in the West Bank. To ensure the first outcome, the following activities will be promoted: - In the “urban” area of Bethlehem, sustainable (energy and environmental, with positive climate impacts) redevelopment of the Bethlehem food wholesale market, serving the entire governorate; - In the “rural” area, promoted the improvement of the quality (including nutritional) of the ROWS of 3 products of excellence of the Mediterranean food culture: oil, honey and date. To achieve the Governance Outcome, the following actions will be implemented: - “Food City Dialogues” among officials from different partner territorial entities on food policy dimensions with Feasibility studies for the implementation of tools to support local food governance; - Promotion in the Palestinian Territories and Italy of the products of the food chains enhanced by the project; - Actions for international projection of the culture and trade of the gastronomic excellence of the partner territories. Finally, to achieve the third result, the following activities will be implemented: - One of EDUCATIONAL nature through the creation of the Akli Baladi point in Bethlehem and the Akli Baladi multipurpose space in Beit Jala, which will host both actions of valorization of local food and actions of food education; - One of a TRAINING nature aimed at young people to give them the opportunity to benefit from higher education paths both in Palestine and in Italy. Finally, an action aimed at promoting, around food, the Israeli-Palestinian dialogue, in the belief that the valorization of local food culture should not be an element of separation or food sovereignty but an element of recognition of mutual identities and an opportunity for dialogue with other food cultures. read more close
