Description
The proposal ‘Towards the next generation of sustainable quality coffee producers in Southern Tanzania’ was developed from an analysis of the needs and problems of the coffee supply chain in the three regions of Mbeya, Songwe and Ruvuma in Tanzania with the objective of fostering the employment growth of Tanzanian youth and women for the development and innovation of a sustainable coffee supply chain. The proposal is framed within SDG 8 - Agenda 2030 ‘Sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all’. The project proposal, through targeted training and capacity building actions, intends to transfer sustainable agricultural practices to coffee operators (OCSE DAC 11330 Vocational Training) contributing to the proper management of land and natural resources (PO OCSE Aid to environment), protecting biodiversity (RIO MARKER). The focus on training on the rational and efficient management of water resources in coffee processing that aims to reduce pollution caused by wastewater (OCSE DAC 14050 Waste management), and on climate change adaptation strategies (RIO MARKER), contribute to strengthening the resilience of smallholders and agricultural cooperatives (OCSE DAC 31194 Agricultural Cooperatives). Income diversification, technological upgrading and innovation are essential components aimed at strengthening the professional skills of young people and women (OCSE DAC 31181 Agricultural Education) engaged in the agricultural sector by giving them the tools to encourage sustainable and profitable quality agricultural production by enhancing local human and environmental resources. Achieving higher levels of economic productivity through microcredit actions for coffee crop production and improving product quality contributes to increasing the level of food security of households in the three intervention regions (PO OCSE Nutrition). The project will adopt a gender mainstreaming approach in all its phases with the objective of fostering a renewed sense of empowerment and economic independence through trainings aimed at strengthening their leadership within the family production realities (PO OCSE Gender Equality). Entrepreneurship training for young people and women and equipment for on-site cooperatives will boost the development of the productive environment and thus the creation of further employment opportunities, exchanges and events to stimulate business opportunities between Italian and Tanzanian companies (PO Trade development). The target groups are coffee operators, in particular: small producers, agricultural cooperatives to which they belong, government officials, farmer leaders and environmental activists. The involvement of these actors will foster the development of new synergies and collaborations that will become a tool for social cohesion and ensure sustainability of the initiative, thus promoting good governance practices and fostering the link between the Italian partners and the local partnership for a sustainable cooperation in the development of the coffee supply chain in the three regions (PO OCSE good governance). The partnership moves in a synergic and multidisciplinary manner. On the one hand institutional bodies (Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the local government authorities), on the other hand CIHEAM Bari (International Org.), important scientific bodies (University of Trieste), private companies (illycaffè), foundations (Ernesto Illy Foundation) and local bodies (Cafè Africa Tanzania and Tanzania Coffee Board) working synergically in the promotion of support policies and the production of sustainable quality coffee.
