The ZAFIT proposal was developed from an analysis of the needs and problems of the livestock sector in Tunisia with reference to the dairy sector in the Governorate of Siliana as well as from an in-depth investigation of the technical-technological gaps of Tunisian livestock operators in terms of skills, know-how and employment opportunities. The proposal is framed within SDG 8 - Agenda 2030 ‘Sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all’. The project aims to have a significant impact by strengthening the technical and managerial skills of livestock and dairy operators, with clear benefits in terms of innovation, sustainability and development of the production sector (OECD DAC 31.120). ZAFIT will adopt a gender mainstreaming approach in all its phases with the aim of fostering labour inclusion and women's empowerment in the sector and in the target communities (OECD DAC Gender Equality P.O.). In Tunisia, the role of women in the agro-livestock sector, although not fully recognised, is central to herd management and related processing activities. Despite their important contribution, women face greater constraints than men in terms of access to extension and assistance services, with consequent impacts on the production phase they perform (feeding, hygiene, milking). The target groups are those working in the livestock sector, in particular: farming families (with specific attention to women and young people); institutional technicians and officials in the livestock and dairy sector. In the intervention logic, the initiative aims to support small and very small production realities by promoting family farming and sustainable food systems, filling the technical skills gaps detected in the value chain of the supply chain. Institutional operators and technicians will be trained in data collection practices (zootechnical, agronomic, climatic) and in monitoring for the assessment of environmental impacts (RIO Marker Clim. Ch. Mitig.). Process and product innovations will be transferred to improve sustainable farm management (P.O O OECD/DAC Aid to Env.) to the benefit of animal welfare and consumer health and to the diversification of production (P.O O OECD/DAC Env. and Nutrition), to the efficient use of natural resources, in particular water (RIO Marker Clim. Ch. Mitig). Entrepreneurship support for young people and women, equipment for on-site enterprises, will boost the development of the zootechnical production value chain and thus the creation of further employment opportunities jointly with the development of an action plan on the agro-zootechnical supply chain in Tunisia (P.O O OECD/DAC Participatory Dev.), B2B events for business opportunities between Italian and Tunisian companies (P.O Trade). The partnership moves in a synergic and multidisciplinary manner. On the one hand, institutional bodies (Municipality, Province and Cremona Chamber of Commerce, ANCI Lomb., Governor of Siliana and the CRDA Regional Commission for Agricultural Development) for the strengthening of the agro-livestock supply chain, which will act as a driving force in Tunisia to face the new challenges of the green and digital transition. On the other hand, CIHEAM Bari (International Organ.), major scientific bodies (Univ. Cattolica del Sacro Cuore; Politecnico di Milano, Tunisian Institute for Agricultural Research and Higher Education - IRESA) and organisations of producers, categories and the chamber and trade fair system (Union of Agriculture and Fisheries of Siliana -URAP, Cremonafiere; Cremona Infor.Technology; Libera Ass. Agric. Cremonesi) to transfer know-how on innovation and sustainability issues and facilitate links and business opportunities between the two countries. read more close
