Description

CIRCOSOL, implemented in the rural areas of the Nacala-Porto and Meconta districts in Mozambique, isan integrated model of environmental and economic sustainability, combining circular economy strategies with renewable energy development, aiming to strengthen local capacities in the environmental and energy fields, promote environmental activism in communities in support of economic and social development, with a special focus on women's empowerment. Mozambique currently misses opportunities for socio-economic development and individual well-being because, due to poor access to electricity, it does not reduce the gap between renewable energy potential and energy deficit. The assessment highlighted several problems: insufficient awareness of the socio-economic benefits of using electricity; lack of economic resources of the beneficiaries; insufficient availability and experience of certified professionals in the sector; lack of investment in renewable energy that would increase access to energy and stimulate the market; lack of awareness on waste management and valorization of circular economy techniques, low participation in sustainable entrepreneurial activities by women. In this context, the project aims to promote the sustainable management and use of natural resources and innovative energy solutions to improve productivity and support circular economy business opportunities run by women and young people, acting on 3 phases: F1) Capacity building in the environmental and energy fields, including knowledge analysis of local actors, training in environmental sustainability and climate change prevention, implementation of mapping, technical studies, recommendation manuals through participatory tools; F2) Promotion of community environmental activism on the Energy-Environment-Development nexus, through environmental protection information campaigns, with a focus on One Health, and awareness raising on the energy-development nexus for local producers and households; F3) Access to energy for 6,000 households, 4 service hubs, 10 local businesses, 15 groups of agricultural producers and the creation of a market-based system of lastmile distribution of solar home systems hinged on sales networks of women micro-entrepreneurs and the private sector, including the promotion of women's empowerment as well as public-private consultation to improve the legislative framework that discourages investment, intervening on technical aspects and promoting business opportunities in Mozambique in the sector of renewable energy to Italian companies. The initiative opts for small-scale interventions, with solutions customized to the local context, affordable, simple and replicable, which exploit theleverage effect on the target communities for women's micro-entrepreneurship; it also provides for economic coparticipation of the beneficiaries for better sustainability and ownership; it favors job creation and income diversification. A heterogeneous partnership, with specific and complementary skills, underpins the initiative: the partners have solid technical experience in topics related to energy (ENGREEN), environmental and waste management (LVIA and POLIMI), business creation (MIRUKU). LVIA, ENGREENand MIRUKU also offer consolidated experience in rural and community development in Nampula Province, such as POLIMI does in other areas of Mozambique. The impact CIRCOSOL aims is the strengthening of the resilience of the local population, changing the perspective on gender relations, waste management and recycling, the use of clean energy and production and consumption patterns focused on efficiency and sustainability, stimulating the solar energy market and private investment. read more close
