Description

Mozambique ranks 183rd out of 193 countries on the 2022 Human Development Index. Currently, growth is mainly driven by the mining and natural gas industries, without creating enough job opportunities at the pace needed for rapid poverty reduction (World Bank, 2023). The country is facing rising poverty levels, with an average of 62% of the population living on less than $0.63 a day (UNICEF Country Office Annual Report, 2023). The initiative aims to contribute to the achievement of full and productive employment and decent work, and to ensure, with a specific focus on Inhambane Province, the formalization and growth of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), in line with SDG 8 and with the priorities identified in the Italy-Mozambique MultiYear Indicative Plan (PIP) 2022-2026. The project is structured into two lines of action, corresponding to the expected results: (i) at the national level, achieve greater economic productivity and strengthen the export of Mozambican products and (ii) at the regional level, increase the number of formal MSMEs in Inhambane Province. For the first result, the initiative will support MSMEs in the process of quality certification and obtaining certificates of origin, necessary for export; in this case the partner will be the Câmara de Comércio de Moçambique (CCM), which will be supported in optimizing the digital platform for issuing certificates of origin and its full adhesion throughout the country. 10 companies will be supported in obtaining at least one quality certificate. With the second result, the initiative will contribute to increasing the number of formal MSMEs in Inhambane Province. An "Enterprise House" will be built for businesses and 7 second-level economic associations in Inhambane (Associação Comercial, Associação de Agronegócio, Associação Provincial dos Empreiteiros, Associação de Hotelaria e Turismo, Associação da Mulher Empreendedora, Associação de Floresta e Madeira, Associação dos Transportadores) with 1,027 members and managed by the CCM Provincial Delegation. The "Enterprise House" will be of fundamental importance in a context where the business fabric does not have a physical space to meet members, organize training and network. The structure will have spaces dedicated to promoting support services for MSMEs, holding conferences and providing technical and legal assistance, with the aim of bringing companies out of the informal sector and accompanying them in the registration process. Awareness campaigns will be carried out to promote the advantages of formalization, training dedicated to potential entrepreneurs in the agro-processing, blue economy and trade sectors. The initiative, aimed at a young and adult target group, will reach a total of 81,020 direct beneficiaries (mostly women, 54%). The partnership is targeted; in addition to the proponent, with expertise in inclusive economic development, the proposal includes CCM, a national second-level body representing Mozambican SMEs that, strengthened, will be the ideal entity to offer them quality services. Strategic partner will be the Institute for the Promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises (IPEME,IP), a government institution whose mission is to encourage the creation and development of small businesses in Mozambique. The KUVANGA cooperative, with its Microcredit service accredited by the Banco de Moçambique, will activate a credit portfolio dedicated exclusively to women's entrepreneurship. In Italy, the partnership is completed with San Lidano, a cooperative that, with personnel experienced in quality processes, will carry out missions on site dedicated to technical support in the process of obtaining quality certificates, supporting companies and CCM. read more close
