Description

The RISE project, the second phase of the I-LEAD initiative (AID 012590/03/9), aims to enhance inclusive vocational training in Ethiopia and promote more inclusive and sustainable youth employment, with an holistic and integrated approach in 3 areas: 1) Strengthen the services offered in vocational training and foster a more inclusive environment for youth from vulnerable backgrounds, youth with disabilities and women by intervening in 6 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and 6 Community-Based Training (CBT) in Addis Ababa, Hawassa, Dilla Town and Mekelle. The intervention aligns the TVETs and CBTs to national disability regulations with the logistical and technical support of CBM and the Ethiopian Centre for Disability and Development ECDD (local partner), as well as addressing the main challenges in the TVET system in collaboration with VIS and the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), through: (i) pre-training to facilitate access to TVET for vulnerable youth and students with disabilities, (ii) improving accessibility, (iii) enhancing the skills of trainers (including technology transfer), (iv) aligning the skills taught with the needs of businesses, (v) strengthening monitoring and evaluation, (vi) providing labour market information, and (vii) optimizing available resources and equipment. To meet the new labour market demands, the initiative promotes activities that are environmentally sustainable and foster the adoption of new technologies. VIS, in collaboration with SDB and the “Italian System”, will update the vocational training curricula in 2 TVETs: (i) Repair and maintenance of biomedical equipment at TVET Don Bosco in Mekelle (Tigray) with the support of Fondazione Istituto Tecnico Superiore per le nuove tecnologie della vita - ITS and (ii) Sustainable agriculture at TVET Don Bosco in Dilla (Southern Ethiopia - SER), with the support of Climate and Development Foundation - CDF. 2) Improving employment inclusion for youth and women by promoting apprenticeships and encouraging companies to employ people with disabilities. To address the low employment opportunities for young people, especially those with disabilities, advocacy and awareness-raising activities will be organized for employers in both public and private sectors, in collaboration with local Organizations of People with Disabilities (OPD); courses will be promoted to increase individual skills (soft skills) and in cooperation with the “Italian System”, the training-to-work transition and dialogue between enterprises and TVETs will be strengthened, encouraging training placements with companies actively involved in the project such as AMCE IVECO and Village Industry PLC. Cooperation with various employment agencies will be activated to encourage equal opportunities for people with disabilities in the search for work. The initiative includes research conducted by the University of Rome - Foro Italico on the employment inclusion of people with disabilities. The aim is to formulate recommendations to promote an inclusive and equitable work environment, to be shared with key actors in the Ethiopian labour market and at an event in Italy. 3) Promote self-employment and the creation of inclusive start-ups and enterprises by fostering female and youth entrepreneurship. Space will be given to self-employment through the launch of a pilot inclusive incubation centre, which for the first time will provide a place where also young entrepreneurs with disabilities can find information, mentoring and practices tailored to their needs to develop income-generating activities, become independent and fulfil themselves. With the support of CDF, youth cooperatives focused on solar energy and agricultural innovation will also be created. read more close
