Description

Thanks to an integrated approach, the project addresses environmental (SDGs 13, 14, 15), economic and social (SDGs 1, 2, 5, 8, 10) issues in the regions of Thiès, Ziguinchor and Sédhiou. Its actions, specifically, aims to (a) counteract the deterioration of coastal and wetlands ecosystems, especially mangrove forests due to climate change; (b) promote sustainable economic growth through the strengthening of activities with a low environmental impact and in favour of decent work for women, young people and men; (c) strengthen territorial governance capacity, in the framework of the National Strategy, which calls for co-management of CMPAs between public administration and CSOs. The project thus aims to protect, restore and enhance environmental and cultural resources and promote efficient and sustainable production systems that guarantee a decent income for the inhabitants of four CMPAs in Senegal: CMPA Joal-Fadiouth and AMCP Somone along the so-called Petite-Côte, in Thiès Region; CMPA Ufoyaal Kassa-Bandial, on the delta of the Casamance River, and the neighbouring CMPA Kassa-Balantacounda, near the Aquaculture centre of Sédhiou, in Casamance, in Ziguinchor and Sédhiou Regions. The CMPAs were established to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs, the intervention will thus support the national CMPA management strategy, a cornerstone of Senegal's environmental policy, which is eager to rebuild its fishing potential and establish sustainable socio-economic development through the achievement of the following results: R1. The population and the CMPAs rely on up-to-date and effective tools and practices for the protection of animal and plant species, resulting from scientific research and oriented towards the improvement of ecosystem services, applicable in the targeted coastal and inland areas (wetlands), including through the restoration of degraded mangrove forests and the enhancement of ecosystem services (blue carbon). R2. The population enhances its productive capacities, valorises local products and resources, resorts to NbS (Nature based Solution) technologies and practices to reduce environmental impact in the fish supply chain and in alternative or complementary income-generating activities, such as aquaculture, oyster farming, beekeeping, horticulture. R3. Representatives of local authorities and institutions within the CMPA strengthen their capacity for comanagement and participatory territorial governance tools for the protection of species and habitats. The complex interdependence between environment-water-energy-agriculture-nutrition-health-labour, typical of local populations, will be dealt with by promoting an integrated management of natural resources and involving different actors and levels of scale. A second relevant link considered is that between migration and development: the project, through the promotion of numerous income-generating activities, contributes to the creation of decent work in the migrants' communities of origin, particularly for young people and women, counteracting one of the causes of emigration. The project will last 36 months, at the end of which it will make a significant impact on the conservation of ecosystems and the sustainable use of natural, agricultural and fishery resources in coastal areas by addressing the problems of overfishing, coastal erosion and the depletion of mangrove ecosystems, and by promoting the integration of ecosystem and biodiversity values into national and local planning processes. A.MAR Blu is implemented by ISCOS in collaboration with IPSIA, AGADA, AGIRE, Assane Seck University of Ziguinchor, the four intervention CMPAs; Regional Fisheries and Surveillance Service of Ziguinchor; CESTHA, ISCOS Emilia-Romagna, Legacoop Romagna, Worldrise read more close
