Description

The “NAÃNE” initiative (“Ancestral Territory” in Tikuna-Maguta) aims to promote climate resilience and biodiversity conservation through sustainable and inclusive territorial management in indigenous communities along the Amazon River, in the Department of Amazonas, Colombia. This action aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 13.1 (climate change adaptation) and 15.9 (integration of biodiversity into development processes). The Colombian Amazon region faces severe challenges due to climate change and biodiversity loss. Indigenous communities, highly dependent on natural resources, are particularly vulnerable to these phenomena, exacerbated by a lack of resilient infrastructure and risk management systems. The project directly involves the indigenous communities of the ACITAM and ATICOYA Resguardo Indigena, as well as the municipalities of Leticia and Puerto Nariño, with the aim of improving their capacity for adaptation and natural resource management. The overall objective is to strengthen climate resilience and conserve biodiversity through sustainable territorial management. Indicators include the number of territorial plans incorporating national climate change management strategies and the percentage of territory incorporating community strategies that consider biodiversity. Specifically, the project intends to implement concrete adaptation and conservation measures in at least eight indigenous Resguardo within three years, monitoring progress such as the number of resilient infrastructures built and the percentage of degraded lands restored. Main activities include conducting studies to better understand the behaviour of the Amazon River and its floods, updating the "Plan de Vida," creating an Early Warning System, and implementing interventions to mitigate climate risks. Integrated rainwater collection and treatment systems will be constructed, along with new resilient housing in low flood-risk areas. For biodiversity conservation, meetings with indigenous communities will be organised, territorial planning documents updated, community monitoring and surveillance programmes created and supported, and reforestation and habitat rehabilitation initiatives launched. The project involves collaboration between local organisations (ACITAM and ATICOYA), companies (RAIZ Fuerza Natural SAS), government bodies (Municipality of Leticia), universities (University of Trento and Universidad Javeriana), NGOs (FUCAI, Fundación Maikuchiga), and the “Area Mujer” of the target indigenous communities to promote gender parity, thus ensuring an integrated and participatory approach. The initiative responds to the urgent needs of the indigenous communities of the Colombian Amazon, promoting climate resilience and biodiversity conservation through inclusive and sustainable territorial management. This project is consistent with the SDGs and the identified markers, ensuring a positive and lasting impact on the region and its communities. read more close
