Description

The second-hand clothing industry in Ghana is a major polluter, generating waste that accumulates and piles up in the environment, causing harm to public health, and endangering the entire regional ecosystem. While the local government's efforts are steadily improving the production, methodology based on the circular economy, the country still faces weaknesses in this area. That’s why, the project has the objective to promote a business development based on circular economy best practices, in the textile industrial sector, while creating new economic opportunities and fostering a culture of sustainability. The project is articulated among the following three components: 1) Enhance best business practices in the circular textile sector, taking into account the activities of the existing Ghana Circular Economy Center of Excellence and its textile value chain activities; 2) Promote business development in the recycling textile industry, both at public and private level, through capacity-building and business advisory services, as well as by facilitating technology promotion and investments, and market access in some selected cross-functional sectors; 3) Mapping and incubating innovative startups and SMEs in the recycling textile waste sector, with a particular focus on engagement with youth and women entrepreneurs. The Project will contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable cities and communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By promoting equitable access to resources and training for women, generating employment, developing recycling best practices, reducing waste, and addressing climate change, the project will support these global objectives. read more close
