Description
The initiative aims to contribute to the food assistance provided by WFP to the Rohingya population hosted in Cox's Bazar and Bhasan Char camps, with special focus on particularly vulnerable groups, such as children and pregnant or breastfeeding women; according to the latest survey on the state of nutrition in the camps (November 2023), Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) among refugees has risen to 15.1%, and therefore above the emergency threshold of 15% according to the WHO classification, and the worst recorded since 2017. Given the rising levels of food insecurity and malnutrition in the camps, the 12-month intervention includes a first General Food Assistance component aimed at equipping over 37,000 Rohingya refugees with an e-voucher to purchase food. In case of emergency (such as floods, fires, etc.), the intervention provides immediate food assistance through the distribution of fortified food and hot meals to about 60,000 refugees. The second component includes a contribution to the nutrition assistance programme, through the provision of malnutrition prevention and treatment services to 7,510 Rohingya boys and girls aged 6-23 months and 2,200 pregnant or lactating women. In addition, the second component involves active case finding through community screening, to ensure early detection of new and potential cases. WFP will, if necessary, assist beneficiaries through home visits to better understand the specific context and provide tailored nutritional advice and support. WFP will integrate awareness-raising and capacity-building activities within beneficiary communities on good nutrition and hygiene practices.
