Description

This initiative will help address two key issues to improve the climate resilience of populations living in ASAL areas. The first relates to the need to increase the flow of funding to counties to integrate climate change into local planning and promote community initiatives that contribute to climate adaptation. The second issue concerns the necessity to accelerate the registration of community lands, as foreseen by the Community Land Act 2016, to ensure land tenure security of communities, particularly for those engaged in semi-nomadic pastoralism. The project will contribute to strengthening financial systems at the county level (County Climate Change Funds – CCCFs) to develop the local capacities required to access and absorb public and private climate finance. The initiative also includes investment funds to support actions for the sustainable management of natural resources in seven counties belonging to the economic block FCDC (Frontier Counties Development Council). Examples of eligible activities include those for the management and regeneration of rangelands and transhumance tracks, access to water, livestock feeding strategies and livestock supply chains, the marketing of typical ASAL products (aloe, incense, rubber arabica, honey, etc.), all activities that contribute to the climatic adaptation of pastoralists and their better resilience to drought. In particular, pasture restoration activities positively impact soils by limiting wind erosion, and therefore they will contribute to combatting the desertification phenomena of the rangelands' most degraded areas. At the same time, the initiative will support some pastoralist communities to register their lands under the Community Land Act 2016 and improve land governance and related policies. Particular attention will be given to strengthening the capacity of women, youth, and other vulnerable groups to assert their rights in implementing the law. read more close

SDGs

  • 13.1 - Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries
  • 1.4 - By 2030, ensure that all men and women, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology and financial services, including microfinance
  • 2.4 - By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality
