Description
The initiative aims to contribute to creating more sustainable and climate-resilient intermediate cities that preserve biodiversity and consider the protection of nature and the surrounding environment in their urban planning processes, with the goal of achieving a positive impact on the local economy, environmental quality, and the well-being of people. The two cities identified for the project implementation are Leticia in the Amazonas Department and the island of San Andrés, part of the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina. Both locations are part of the "Biodiverse and Resilient Cities" program of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, which aimed to identify 14 Colombian cities to initiate a process of incorporating biodiversity into urban development and planning. The initiative develops actions that promote the integration of biodiversity as an opportunity for economic and social development and is based on five main intervention axes: training and capacity building, formulation of public policy tools for planning and urban development processes, design and implementation of infrastructure works, creation of green jobs and research activities, technological development, and innovation to improve knowledge, protection, and sustainable use of biodiversity resources.
