Description

This initiative aims to contribute to the protection, restoration and promotion of forests in Mozambique and Zimbabwe through solid integrated management systems. The specific objective is to strengthen local capacity in Mozambique and Zimbabwe to implement a sustainable, integrated and efficient management system for Miombo forests. The integrated and sustainable management of this ecosystem improves the preservation of the protective, productive and socio-economic functions they perform, as well as safeguarding the biological vitality and diversity they represent. The project supports the adoption of a participatory approach, such as the "Community Based Forest System", in order to involve local communities in an efficient management and promote an integrated strategy through three main lines of intervention. The first axis involves local and national institutions in order to strengthen cross-border cooperation, knowledge management and information sharing on the control of illegal timber trafficking, which is particularly verified along the border of the two countries involved. In addition, the promotion of sustainable alternative income-generating activities, and the creation and training of community-based forest management committees, increases economic opportunities for rural households through the sustainable use of timber and non-timber natural resources, through the promotion of values chains to aim a positive impact on both economic and environmental sector. Finally, protected area management is promoted through awareness-raising and education campaigns on the multiple functions and benefits of Miombo's forests and their importance, and by fostering participatory monitoring of the target areas, considering the development of inovative financial mechanism such as REDD+ for securing finance for sustainable forest management. read more close
