Description

The initiative aims to contribute to increasing the welfare of the populations of the Tahoua and Agadez regions, priority areas in Niger for the Agency, starting with the improvement of their food security conditions, by increasing the incomes of these populations, in particular women and young people, through the enhancement of agri-food systems and the leather value chain. Despite occupying a large part of the population, agro-forestry systems are poorly productive due to population growth and climate change, which result in soil degeneration, poor availability of technical means, poor valorisation of traditional knowledge, poor dissemination of technical skills, limited access to markets and gender inequalities. The objectives of the initiative will be achieved through two distinct strategies: agroecology (an integrated approach that optimises the interactions between plants, animals, humans and the environment, to ensure a productive, sustainable, equitable and climate change resilient agri-food system, enhancing social aspects and traditional knowledge) and market system development (which aims to enhance the value of the leather supply chain, through an improvement in the quality of techniques and products for not only economic but above all social and environmental improvement). The beneficiaries of the initiative will be operators, especially women and young people, in the agri-food and leather sectors of the two regions. This intervention is in continuity with AICS initiatives, aligns with national policies and is consistent with joint European programming. Moreover, it comes at a time of economic and social vulnerability that has affected the country following the coup d'état of 26 July 2023 and the resulting trade and financial sanctions. read more close
