Description

Christians in Iraq have contributed to the history, culture and development of the country, but they have also faced persecution and discrimination over the centuries, as well as being particularly affected, like all vulnerable groups of the Iraqi population, by the various wars fought in the country. The main challenges for Christians in Iraq remain security and protection from extremist groups. The overall objective of the project is to support Christian communities by addressing basic needs, protecting their rights, promoting socio-economic inclusion, fostering reconciliation and inter-religious dialogue and making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, durable and sustainable (specific objective). With relatively stable security in Duhok Province, one of the attractions in the Governorate, the main challenges for Christians relate to the access to basic essential services at the community level, particularly water and health. Risks related to climate change and accessible and safe health care (including reproductive and maternal and child health, care for the disabled and elderly, first aid medical and psychosocial support services) on a community basis are highlighted as the major critical, everyday issues to be addressed in order to continue living in the small and ancient Christian villages scattered throughout the province. The priorities expressed during the need assessment, conducted in June 2023 by Italian and Iraqi AISPO staff, focused on: - Secure access to a safe and integrated water service system (clean water distribution and efficient drainage and sewage system) at community level; - Access to basic health services at community level, with a focus on maternal and child health, first aid and care for the elderly and persons with disabilities. The project thus consists of two outcomes: 1. Improved water resources and sanitation services in 10 Christian villages in rural areas; 2. Improved accessibility and quality of sanitation services for Christians and communities of other faiths. These outcomes will be achieved through the implementation of a series of activities: Outcome 1: 1.1 Rehabilitation and maintenance of rural water and sanitation resources; 1.2 Community-based vocational training in rural water and sanitation maintenance and support for economic and employment inclusion; 1.3 Capacity building in sustainable water and sanitation management at community and local authority levels; 1.4 Awareness-raising at community level on the proper use of water and the impact of climate change. Outcome 2: 2.1 Renovation and expansion of health services at Mar Narsai Primary Health Care Centre to activate a delivery room and diagnostic unit; 2.2 Training and activation of community-based health workers to support the most vulnerable (especially the elderly, people with disabilities, women victims of violence) in 10 Christian villages in Duhok Province; 2.3 Awareness-raising on community health issues and the rights of the most vulnerable people (women, people with disabilities, etc.). All activities will be carried out in cooperation with the local authorities and members of the communities concerned. read more close
