Description
The main aim of the project, following the actions provided by AID 012121-02-3 and AID 012590-05-3, is to support the Christian minorities in Iraq who are still living in conditions of instability and insecurity as a result of the Iraqi conflict and the socio-political situation that has marked out the whole country since years. The Specific Objectives of this initiative are to guarantee the human rights of the Christian community in Baghdad and Basra in social, educational, and work sector through the implementation of services and actions for psycho-social support, the inclusion of persons with disabilities, vocational training, and job placement, and to promote the construction of a culture of Human Rights and peaceful religious coexistence starting from academic teaching for the benefit of teachers, students, and the community. The main target group is the Christian minority population in the country, who are still victims of persecution in certain contexts. The strategy provides n. 3 results concerning the improvement of the professional skills of young people for job placement and capacity building to social workers. In particular, for social inclusion professionals, functional actions are promoted for the creation of the Individual Life Project of people with disabilities. Result 2, concerns psycho-social support in the Governorate of Basra, with particular attention to women and families. Lastly, actions will be developed in order to establish a culture of Human Rights, involving students and teachers from four of the main universities in Baghdad and Basra attended by students of different religious faith. Actually, at universities future professionals prepare themselves, so it is essential that teaching and awareness-raising for, about and with Human Rights be part of the course of study, in order to develop harmonious coexistence and promote actions of inter-religious dialogue and peace building. The project core focus is to guarantee and protect the Human Rights of the population belonging to Christian minorities, locating the action in areas in the country in which Christian minority is particularly vulnerable. Therefore, the actions are directly linked to the needs identified, in terms of support for the employment of young people, with particular attention to the implementation of the Individual Life Project of persons with disabilities. Another relevant need is identified in Basra governorate in terms of psycho-social support to the target population, started with the AID 012590-05-3 project, and still in need of strengthening. Lastly, the need of Human Rights to become part of the country's culture through the involvement of universities (teachers and students), as strategic actors for achieving the expected results and objectives. Furthermore, the interreligious dialogue actions represent a concrete response to the critical issue that in most cases the various religious denominations do not know each other and ignore what each one is doing. The project strategy provides the collaboration of local partners of consolidated experience and professionalism, with whom the JPIIF has worked since the first initiative in Iraq: Caritas Iraq, Hammurabi Human Rights Organisation and the Archeparchy of Basra, and at the international level STUDIO IN. The impact of the project in the communities targeted by the action is expected to be very high, because activities for official inclusion of the Christian community in Iraq are very limited and circumscribed, in any case not enough to bring the identified target group out of the on-going persecution.
