Description

This proposal for action aims to contribute to the strategic priorities of development and structural transformation of the malian economy to create jobs and more decent incomes for young people and women, through interventions in two agricultural subsectors characterized by a strong potential for added value: the mango sector and the modern horticulture sector. The proposal aims to contribute to the strengthening of the Malian production and cooperative system in the supply chains in question through training courses at several levels: at management level to improve the management of producer cooperatives, at the level of sustainability of production techniques and harvesting and treatment of products; at the level of storage and marketing of the products themselves. A great added value is represented by many actors of the Italian system (OSC, University of Bologna, Italian Companies, Italian importers) who have expressed interest in their involvement in the process of strengthening local producers with a view to promoting a new innovative business model at the level:  management and technology; economic, social and environmental sustainability;  inclusiveness so as not to exclude the most vulnerable sections of the population. The Malian private sector has shown great interest in Italian technology not only to improve production, pre-treatment and storage techniques, but also downstream in product transformation processes. This is testified by the negotiations being finalized between Italian and Malian companies supported also thanks to the support of AICS which favored their participation on the occasion of the MACFRUT fruit and vegetable fair held in Rimini in May 2023 (see message Embassy Bamako of 0205260 of 29/05/2023). This proposal provides for the development of specific interventions that will be formulated and presented in the future by the Italian NGOs following a call launched by Aics Dakar and which will define more specifically objectives, activities, results, macro budget lines as well as implementation times. The focus is to intervene to fill the deficit of a structured production system that can guarantee product quality standards and traceability in production and conservation processes. The objective is therefore to improve the technical and entrepreneurial skills of cooperatives of producers and micro family enterprises formed by Malian young people and women in the regions of Sikasso, Koulikoro and in the administrative district of Bamako. This proposal, while representing a stand-alone initiative in response to specific needs of the productive sector, is fully integrated with a project proposal being evaluated for the next Joint Committee for financing on the multilateral channel and drafted by the ILO (International Labour Organization) entitled "An Ka Baara – Travail décent et augmentation des revenus dans les filières de la mangue et de l'horticulture moderne". The project in question formulated by the ILO is aimed at creating employment in the processing sector of products belonging to the mango and fruit and vegetable supply chain and will contribute to improving the current entrepreneurial system already existing but which also needs to be strengthened at several levels (see specifically the needs identified in the relative evaluation sheet). read more close
