Description

The initiative aims at carrying out the environmental rehabilitation of Boye Lake in the city of Jimma to turn it into a user-friendly, scenic and naturalistic area through water sanitation and rehabilitation of the surrounding green areas. The initiative will also undertake the organization of a management and maintenance system for Boye Lake, empowering the women of the community, involving them into the green infrastructure management, to ensure the sustainability of the intervention. In parallel, awareness-raising and dissemination activities will be carried out on wetland conservation and management that will be beneficial in promoting, among the resident population, a preservation approach and enhancement of environmental resources to provide the Jimma area with tourism and recreational opportunities The expected results are 1.1.1 Boye Lake restored and its biodiversity conserved; 1.1.2 Realized green areas around Boye Lake; 1.2.1 Improved management of Boye Lake, wetlands and surrounding green areas; 1.2.2 Appropriate wetland conservation practices are shared among stakeholders. The initiative will also provide trainings for women and awareness campaigns for improved capacity of authorities and citizens, streamlining a women empowering process for the management and maintenance of green and wetland areas surrounding the lake and the lake itself that will also be enhanced through visits and workshops for an exchange of information on best practices in use. The initiative is fully aligned with Ethiopia's 10-year Development Plan (10YDP) and its continental and global commitments, including the UN SDGs. The initiative is included in the Country Program for Cooperation between Italy and Ethiopia 2023-2025, sub-sector 2.4. The initiative is in synergy with the initiatives of the World Bank, the EU, and the Italian Cooperation's initiative “Support to job creation oriented skills and infrastructures development” presented in the 2023 programming. The initiative is considered of primary importance and has been included in the nationwide GEBETA LE TEWLDE initiative, which aims to improve the country's image. read more close
