Description

According to the estimates of the harmonized framework on the state of food insecurity in the country, in the last quarter of 2022 there were over 440,765 people in a situation of severe food insecurity in a country of less than 5 million people. In this rather difficult context, it is urgent to support the populations to strengthen food security and the resilience capacities of Mauritanian agro-pastoral communities as to cope with environmental risks and conflicts. This project will aim to strengthen the communities' capacities to better manage natural resources and improve their resilience to environmental risks through the adoption of sustainable and healthy production and consumption methods contributing to the consolidation of peace. Over three years, the project will intervene in two regions (wilaya) on the border with Mali, namely Hodh El Gharbi, Hodh El Chargui, with an integrated approach that holistically supports Mauritania's challenges through the threefold humanitarian-development nexus and peace. Overall, the project is divided into 4 main components, including: i) improving food and nutrition security with a preventive approach based on strengthening agricultural production sensitive to nutritional issues; ii) reduction of pressure on ecosystems through the promotion of fodder crops for better animal production; iii) strengthen the resilience of agro-pastoral communities on the Mauritanian-Malian border through an approach based on the humanitarian development-peace-nexus ; iv) improve animal disease surveillance and control capabilities. The implementation of the project will be based on a solid partnership with government authorities, NGOs and other local organizations, as well as international actors in the areas of intervention. With the aim of reaching 83200 direct beneficiaries of which at least 30% women and youth, the project will be implemented on the basis of a solid monitoring and evaluation system put in place to monitor the project indicators, measure the effectiveness of the interventions and ensure accountability towards the beneficiaries and various actors. read more close
