Description

The initiative bases the proposed action on the necessity to respond to an already ongoing food security crisis, which risks to explode, identifying its causes in the current economic crisis, worsened by the Beirut port explosion, which involved the country’s main silos, and in the governmental subsidies for the importation of wheat and legumes to the disadvantage of the domestic production, as well as in the more recent crisis between Russia and Ukraine, from which Lebanon used to import more than 80% of its soft wheat needs. The present initiative, to be implemented by CIHEAM Bari based on a request of the Ministry of Agriculture and an explorative joint mission in November 2022, aims at reducing food insecurity through an integrated multilevel approach, by achieving 3 results: strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture and LARI in the seed quality of the main strategic food crop imported and locally produced (R1); promote the testing and multiplication of high quality seeds among farmers (R2); and increase the capacity of the LARI technicians and other sector operators to raise awareness and provide assistance to farmers and private sector for the adoption of properly tested seeds (R3). The project activities will contribute to improve the quality and quantity of wheat and legumes’ seeds for multiplication and spreading onto the Lebanese territory through the creation of a certified lab for seeds testing and analysis, and the implementation of demonstration fields, reducing at the same time the needed inputs, in particular fertilisers and pesticides, and the harvest losses. Through awareness campaigns and dissemination events on the use of certified and high-quality seeds aimed at all sector operators, public, private and international, the scalability and sustainability of the results will be insured. read more close
