Description

Moldova is approaching a significant political milestone, with the presidential elections scheduled for October 20, 2024, alongside a critical referendum on EU accession. Italy's commitment to Moldova goes beyond the event itself represented by the Ministerial Conference of the Moldova Partnership Platform, and embraces both Moldova's accession to the EU (also thanks to Italy's commitment with the co-presidency of the Working Group dedicated to energy and the environment), and Italy's projection on a global scale. Against this sensitive political background and within the framework of the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund (EVRF) implemented by the Government of Moldova, with UNDP support, this initiative aims to expand support for the digitalization of the energy sector and to align Moldova's energy sector with EU standards by addressing legislative gaps and deploying smart metering technologies, as well as integrate the EVRF with broader social protection measures for efficiency gains and cost-savings, while ensuring long-term energy affordability and sustainable poverty reduction. The digitalization of the energy system via deployment of Smart Metering in Electricity Pilot Initiative and the digital transformation of social protection services together creates an integrated approach to digitalization and modernizing Moldova's energy sector and social protection systems. By addressing legislative gaps, deploying smart metering technologies, and enhancing the digitalization of both the energy and social protection sectors, this integrated approach aims to bridge the gap between Moldova's current regulatory framework and EU standards, improving energy efficiency, reducing energy poverty, and ensuring sustainable energy consumption practices. read more close
